In Memory

Marilyn Thornton (Ohmann) - Class Of 1952

OBITUARY FROM CASTLE HILL FUNERAL HOME (DYER, IN) WEBSITE:

She never met a stranger and had a smile and warm hello for everyone. Marilyn Ohmann, 88, of Lake Station, Indiana, passed away October 24th, 2023. She was born in Summerville, West Virginia in 1934 to Marvin & Mary Thornton, who moved to the northwest Indiana area like many others, in search of better lives and better work in the mills.

She attended Hobart High School where she was a cheerleader and worked as a car hop at a local drive-in to pay for her uniforms. That was a trait that never left her as she was a very proud and hard worker all her life. One of the highlights of her high school years was being voted as the Homecoming Queen. She was always proud, and grateful for that since it was her classmates who selected her.

It was at that drive-in she met the love of her life, Edward (Bud) Ohmann in 1952. At first she thought he was a hoodlum and wasn’t interested. But he persisted and convinced her to go out with him. After one date, she realized what a true gentleman he was and they soon fell in love. Excited to start their new lives together, they were married on January 29th, 1954, at a little Church in Hobart Indiana.

Mom and dad couldn’t wait to start a family of their own, and their children meant the world to them. They would be the umpire or concession worker, or the cheering parents in the stands, and would always move heaven and earth to provide their children with everything they wanted or needed.

And though she loved being a wife and mother, one of her favorite roles was as Grandma. She treasured her time with her grandchildren and loved following their activities and sporting events. Never failing to cheer them on from the stands, as she did for her own children.

Mom had many friends throughout her life and the number grew with each passing year. From high school to helping her favorite political candidate, or working with the Lake Suburban Women’s Bowling League where she was voted into the Hall of Fame, or simply helping out at the little league field. She always treated everyone with kindness.

Over the years mom worked as an attorney’s secretary, a telephone operator, a waitress, an office manager, security at a beach, a councilwoman, and even as a greeter at Walmart. She had too much energy to just simply sit around and had to be involved with something.

Everyone who knew mom, knew how much she loved bowling. From the local leagues to traveling across the country for tournaments, it was a passion for most of her life. Dad was always there with her and in later years relegated himself to carrying luggage and bowling balls, but was more than happy to do that as long as they were together.

We couldn’t have asked for a better mom and will miss her terribly every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband Edward (Bud) Ohmann, Parents Marvin & Mary Thornton, SisterPat (Bruce) Lynn, Brother Bill (Diane) Thornton, Sister Nancy (Dave) Couron, and is survived by Sister Shirley (Don) Dammarell, Brother Mike (Joyce) Thornton, Daughter Jamie (Wally) Dye, Son Jay (Pam) Ohmann, six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Marilyns life will be held at a future date.
