Yvonne Smith, 88, long-time resident of Highland, Indiana, passed peacefully with her family alongside her on Monday, October 2, 2023.
June, as she was known to family and friends, graduated from Hobart High School; class of 1954. She met, fell in love with, and then married Alan Wood Smith (Woody) shortly after graduation there. They had three children together, made Highland their home, and enjoyed life with family and friends until Woody's death in 1996.
Most of June's time was spent busily taking care of her children, Jeff, Kelly and David. She worked part-time alongside Woody managing ticket sales for Munster High School's many athletic events.
June loved to read, sunbathe, and socialize at regular neighborhood parties. Although she had always claimed to be shy, she had a tremendous capacity to engage comfortably with anyone she encountered in daily life. She had the ability to make acquaintances feel as though they had just run into an old friend.
One of the most special experiences of June's life came late, while in her late seventies. A child of strict, religious parents, June was never allowed to participate in typical childhood social events most take for granted. She had never been able to attend a dance or prom while in high school. While regularly enjoying a senior activity center in Colorado, staff decided to hold their first-ever Prom night. Attendees had hair, nails and make-up done professionally and everyone dressed in formal attire. They ate, drank, and danced the night away. That evening, June received a trophy for 'Best Dressed' female. She would literally radiate with joy when later recounting the evening for everyone she knew.
June is survived by her children Kelly Jack and David Alan Smith; grandchildren Nathan Alan Jack and Alexa Jack; great-granddaughter Julia Jack; siblings Richard Garrard, Susan (John) Gibson, and Charlene Havrilesko. She is preceded in death by her husband Alan Wood Smith, son Jeffrey Alan Smith, grandson Christian Jack, parents Charles and Grace Alene Garrard, and siblings Ronald Garrard, Lawrence Garrard and Sheree Garrard Ovanek. She has truly left a deep void in the lives of those who loved her.
A celebration of June's life will be held Friday, October 6, 2023 at Fagen-Miller Funeral Home, 2828 Highway Ave, Highland, IN, with visiting from 11:30 am until the time of service at 1 pm. Burial to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery.
