John Cousins

John Henry Cousins 1947-2022

John Cousins was born on October 4, 1947, in the quaint southern town of Newberry SC. He was the son of Frank and Margaret Mitchell Cousins and had an older brother and two sisters. Following his parent’s divorce, his mother moved with the kids to Pennsylvania and settled in Hatboro to be near several aunts in the summer of 1960.

John started seventh grade with us at Keith Junior High. Our yearbook mentions his sweet southern drawl and the fact that he was a home run hitter. He was, in fact a lifelong sports fan- especially softball, Univ SC football and golf! (And perhaps an occasional game of pool with his buddies in the evenings).

Shortly after graduation, he enlisted in the Army and served 2 years in Vietnam as a combat engineer.

When he returned from the service, he got a job with ACME Markets where he worked for 26 years as produce manager at the Jenkintown store. He met his first wife, Mary (a Warminster girl) in the late 80’s. She had 2 children, and he became their stepdad. After he retired from Acme in the late 90’s he and Mary moved the family back to Newberry. In SC, he signed on with BILO Markets (a southern chain) and was a produce manager once again. He retired from BILO after 10 years.

He spent a great deal of his retirement time playing golf. He played every weekend with his sister Debbie and his brother-in-law… and also in between whenever he could manage it. While he was known in his younger days as a Mustang guy, it is noteworthy that his last three cars in SC were Corvettes!

Sadly, Mary died of Cancer in 2002. They had been married about 15 years.

In 2020, John suffered a stroke. He was able to walk, but playing golf was out of the question. He was married to his second wife, Susan, at that time. He died on December 13, 2022, from Covid.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Huffman Cousins; three stepchildren and their spouses, sisters Paula Epting and Debbie Cousins (Bob Simons) all of Newberry; a brother Nelson Cousins (Pauline) of Harleysville, PA and four step-grandchildren.

Services were held on Friday, December 16, 2022, at Colony Lutheran Church. A military honor guard was present at the graveside and his brother Nelson was presented the folded flag.

Because John was an animal lover, especially fond of cats, the family has requested that memorial contributions be made in his name to the Newberry Humane Society, PO Box 485, Newberry, SC 29108
