Westchester Alumni Association
Scholarship Fundraising Efforts
The Westchester Alumni Association (WAA) was established to unite all alumni and friends, both of Westchester High School and the Westchester Academy for International Studies (WAIS), and to provide programs to benefit our members to the fullest. One of our most successful and rewarding programs has been the development and implementation of the Westchester Alumni Association Student Scholarship program which was established in 2005. One hundred percent of every dollar donated to the scholarship fund is directed for use as a scholarship for a WAIS student and is tax deductable.
WAA strives to maintain and grow this effort but it takes donations from friends and alumni just to continue to offer the scholarships at last years level. WAIS produces many outstanding graduates and with the spiraling cost of attending a university or college, the WAA hopes to increase the funding for the scholarships. Our goal is to double the number of scholarship recipients for the Class of 2009. As of January 14, 2009 we currently have $2,000 dollars toward our 2009 goal of $16,000. We only have 2 months left to meet this goal. Please make your tax deductible donation using the Scholarship Donation selection on the left hand menu (instuctions provided to pay by credit card or by personal check). A donation of any amount is greatly appreciated.
This fairly unprecedented program for a high school alumni association to embrace, is the only one of it’s kind in the Spring Branch School District, and the effort is totally supported by donations and fundraising activities of alumni membership and friends of Westchester. There are no administrative expenses for this effort and every dollar collected is earmarked for scholarships to Westchester Academy graduating seniors. The scholarship program is available on a competitive basis to current Senior Class members attending Westchester Academy for International Studies and the program issued its first scholarships to graduating seniors from the WAIS Class of 2007.
Although in its infancy, the WAA was able to issue scholarship checks of $1000 directly to the college or university of six finalists on May 25, 2007, for a total of $6,000 in scholarships. We held our first annual Scholarship Donor Appreciation & Awards Dinner on April 9. 2007. Joining in the festivities were Pam Butler, WAIS Principal, and Beverly Martin, WAIS Counselor. Five of the six awardees were in the International Baccalaureate program at Westchester Academy.
In May of 2008 we were able to increase the number of scholarships provided to eight. WAA gave eight individual students $1000 scholarships for use at the school of their choice.
WAIS is one of only 70 high schools in Texas approved to offer the International Baccalaureate degree to students. Each of the student scholarship recipients are bright, talented and dedicated students which our community can be proud of. Full scholarships are extremely hard to come by and the cost of higher education has risen drastically over the years. A $1000 scholarship does truly make a significant difference to these students and their parents especially during that first semester away from home.
The WAA is a 501c4 charitable organization, we hope that each of you can remember this fund when you are making your year-end charitable contributions, or at any other time of the year. Donations made through the website link below are tax deductible. Remember, your contribution to the WAA Scholarship Fund will make a difference to these students as they strive to earn their place in the American and International workplace and society.
