Well Known Firefighter and Paramedic Laid to Rest Wednesday, October 3, 6:42 p.m. By Andy Hirsch The funeral procession passed under an American flag as it made its way to the Waller Cemetery. As the body of Carl 'Doc' Poust was carried out of the Benton Volunteer Fire Hall his fellow firefighters, emergency medical technicians and other first responders lined up to give him a final salute. Poust was a paramedic supervisor in Berwick and a volunteer firefighter in Benton and several other communities. Some of his close friends are still in disbelief Poust, 32, is gone. He died after a crash Friday night. "I think it's a nightmare," Jason Weisenberger, a friend and fellow firefighter said. "I know it's not. I'm just hoping I wake up soon because losing him, it hurts." After the funeral at the fire hall Poust's casket was loaded into an ambulance. It was a difficult time for Carl's younger brother Mike, who's also an E.M.T. and volunteer firefighter. "It's tough because he was my brother, he was my hero, he was a lot of things to me," Mike Poust said. A procession with dozens of emergency vehicles from Columbia, Lycoming, Northumberland, Luzerne and other counties made its way to the nearby village of Waller. There the ambulance carrying Poust's body passed under an American flag, held high by fire trucks from Espy and Berwick, and into the Waller Cemetery. Carl Poust, 32, died after a crash Friday night. "He touched so many people everywhere, not just Columbia County, there's other counties he's touched," Weisenberger said. He was happy so many turned out to say goodbye. "It's great, it really is. I'm glad this many people showed up to honor Doc." "I knew it was going to be like this because he was loved by everyone. Everybody that knew him, loved him," Carl's brother Mike added. Many who went to the funeral consider Carl Poust a brother. Now that's he's gone they vow the show of support today will continue to be there for the family he left behind. "They are never going to have to want or need for anything. If their family cannot provide it the E.M.T. fire community is going to be there. Not only now but forever," said friend and E.M.T. Jeff Kwiecien. Mike Poust said Carl's wife and two daughters, who were also involved in the crash Friday night, are doing okay. A memorial fund has been set up for the family. I will always miss Carl. He was always very sweet and friendly. I had not seen Carl for a long time after we graduated, but then ran into him a couple years ago at the mall. He was with his new family, we visited for a few minutes and caught up on our lives. I specifically remember how happy he seemed. I'm grateful to have had that opportunity.
