Charles Anderson

"They that love beyond the world cannot be separated by it . . . This is the comfort of friends, that though they may be said to die, yet their friendship and society are, in the best sense, ever present, because immortal." - William Penn

Charles Anderson was killed the summer after we graduated high school. He was a good son, a good brother and a good friend.

In honor of Charles, Chris Anderson, who graduated from Huntsville High in 1990 and the University of Alabama in 1995, shared a few thoughts about his brother:

What Charles liked the most
“What he liked most was spending time with his friends and his two kids, Laquita, who is 20, and Mondarius who is 19. At school, on the football field and the weekends, we spent a lot of time together. We were two peas in a pod. Wherever he went, I went—he had his driver’s license, so I pretty much rode with him all the time.”

On playing football
“We played running back together. He was number 11 and I was 12. On the field, it was him blocking for me, and me blocking for him. We always took care of each other on and off the field as much as possible.”

Plans after high school
“He was enrolled at Alabama A&M and was going to try out for the football team and try to play baseball. He was like most of us. He wasn’t sure what he wanted to do after he got out, but was going to go there and try to figure it out. He was just in the beginning stages of that.”

How Charles affected Chris
“Time heals all wounds, and you want to remember him and not forget—that’s the main thing. What it taught me is family is everything. I tell my family I love them every day. If you haven’t lost a sibling, it’s one of those things that opens your eyes and makes you realize you should live life to the fullest.”

A special dedication
“When I was playing for Alabama, the first time I touched the field was against Southern Miss in 1990. Before I went onto the field I said a prayer to him and said, ‘I hope you’re down here watching me.’ ”
