School History

Government College, Ibadan was founded on February 28th 1929 on the Hills of Apata Ganga, Ibadan with 29 students.

The Founding Fathers were Selwyn McGregor Grier, who conceived the idea and V.P.V Powell, the first Principal.

During the 2nd world war, the school had to temporarily move to several sites before finally resettling at its original site.

The school has produced over 80% of the presidents of the Nigerian Society of Engineers since its inception and one of the four Black Africans in history to be awarded a Nobel prize.

GCI is still waxing strong. With the help of the Old Boys, their friends and by the Grace of God the school will still go places.
