This is Tom Imerson reporting from 3673 Darston Street in beautiful Palm Harbor, Florida (34685) - (727) More…787-8688. Yes, I was a member of the Northwest HS Class of 1963 until my parents both died (Mom in June of 1961 and Dad in November of 1961). Immediately after my Dad’s funeral I moved to Hudson, Ohio with an aunt and uncle. I did not have the opportunity to say good-bye to most of you. I enrolled at Hudson High School where I graduated from in 1963. After graduating from HHS I went to Xavier University in Cincinnati where I received a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration. In June of 1968 I married Evelyn (Ev) Grohe who graduated from Hudson High in 1962....we dated in high school and even though she went to Mt. Union College in Alliance we were always drawn to each other. We have had a great life together and this month (June 2009) we celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary.

We had two children: Todd and Ryan. Todd underwent a heart transplant in August of 1991 and, unfortunately, had a massive heart attack on April 2, 1996 and died very suddenly. His brother, Ryan, is now 35, is married and has 3 children. They live about an hour north of us in Brooksville, FL. As all of us with grandchildren know: Grandchildren change your life!

Ev is a 2nd grade teacher. I spent my career in education most recently as the Principal of Gulf High School (Pasco County, FL). An interesting side story: One day at Gulf High I stopped in the registrar’s office to welcome a student who was enrolling. I often played a game with the new enrollees and offered to guess a number of demographic items about him. I would ask him questions to limit the total picture....well, to make a long story short, I guessed he was from Michigan and since Northwest HS was the only high school I knew I guessed that is where he was from. To the dismay of all in the room that was exactly where he was coming from! His father, who was enrolling him, was a NHS graduate. In fact, we had both been taught by some of the same teachers. Small world.

Last September I retired and now keep my days full with volunteer work at my wife’s school, taking piano lessons, attending music classes, and generally be a “House Husband”. Now that I’m retired, I’m recommending it to everyone!

Life is filled with twists and turns as we all know. When I left Northwest High School I had many mixed feelings: I was leaving so many wonderful friends, I had lost both of my parents and I was going to live with people I did not really know. Now, 48 years later, I can look back and appreciate all the good times I had with NHS friends and also realize the many blessings which came from my parent’s early deaths.....most importantly was meeting my wonderful wife and making such a fulfilled life together. It just proves that you just never know what that box of chocolates will offer.

Hope all of the classmates are facing life’s challenges with gusto. I am proud to have been a member of the NHS Class of ‘63. Thank you Phyllis for contacting me. Unfortunately, I cannot make the gathering but hope you have a wonderful time and have a toast to all those who are not able to be there. If any of you want to contact me please do....or if you are ever in Florida feel free to call.
