Joe Harpur was my great friend. Our families often went away together- to places like the Transkei and Mocambique. He loved adventure. A defining moment in his life was when he saw the movie "Deliverance".
He always dreamed of shooting the rapids on a raft .In the late seventies he arranged such a trip, so he and three friends went down the Tugela on a raft. Unfortunately, they didn't know the route very well, and the river was in spate after heavy rains. There was an unexpected waterfall and Joe and one of the others drowned
It took days to recover the bodies.Still devastating after all these years.
What a terrible tragedy! I had no idea. I too remember the movie, very disturbing. I had already read the book which was gripping. Sounds like a terrible ordeal for you that never goes away completely.
I read the book on our honeymoon 42 years ago and it still is seared into my memory. The movie is a great and very suspenseful representation of the book.
