Terry Payne

     Word has been received by Mr. and Mrs. Holder Payne, 1452 1/2 Caledonia St., that their son, Army Sgt. Terry J. Payne, 22, was killed Wednesday, August 5, 1970 in Vietnam while on a combat mission.

 

     He is the 54th La Crosse and area person to die in the Vietnam conflict.

 

     Payne was born in La Crosse February 11, 1948, and was a 1966 graduate of Aquinas High School.  He also attended 2 1/2 years at La Crosse State University before enlisting in the Army in March 1969.

 

     Payne went to Vietnam in March 1970 as a scout leader in reconnaissance.  At the time of his death he was engaged to marry Suzanne Grant, formerly of La Crosse.

 

     Services will be announced later by Nelson Funeral Home pending arrival of the body from Vietnam.  He was buried in the La Crosse Catholic Cemetery.
