Karen L. Scarseth

Hi Central Classmates:of 1968:

I am sharing a special post about my special twin brother, Konrad Scarseth. He was the extrovert, friendly, known for his sense of humor and his big beautiful smile. Our family  lived on the southside of La Crosse where there were young families and many kids to play with. We walked to Longfellow Elementary,  Emerson (bussed),  Webster,  Longfellow Junior High, and of course,  old Central and new Central.  During  high  school  and college years Konrad worked at the Sinclair Service Station across from new Central High School, where Cost Cutters is now located. Konrad grew up with older sister Karen (1 hour older);  younger sister, Mary (Central Class of 70');  Mother, Helen, housewife and volunteer;  Father,  Bernard, a Designing Engineer employed at Dairyland Power Cooperative; also a volunteer. Our family attended Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.

1968: Konrad enrolled at U-WL

1971:  Konrad married "Love of his Life" Lynette Mason (Aquinas Class of 68'). They  lived in Onalaska and Lyn taught at Irving Pertzsch Elementary School for 34 years.

1972:  Konrad joined the National Guard.

1973:  Konrad graduated from UW-L with a degree in Business Administration and Political Science. Two days after college graduation, Kon went to work for Russell Cleary in the Corporate Headquarters of Heileman Brewery.

1975:  First son was born. Konrad and Lyn raised  four boys:  Michael, Rob, Kevin, and Brian.

1997:  Konrad died unexpectedly of a heart attack at the age of 47 on 9/7/97.  He was watching a Packer game with two of his boys at home in Onalaska.

2008:  First grandchild was born. There are  now seven grandchildren, three daughters-in-law, and one great-niece that Kon never got to know. The grandchildren range in age from 1 month to 9 years old:   Jaelyn Amelia, Sofia Lyn,  Mason Michael,  Ava Charlotte,  Rosalyn (Rosy) Pamela, Keaton Konrad, and Leo Josep ( born Dec. 6).

Lyn raised the four boys on her owan and ensured that each went on to graduate college. She adores the grandchildren and inclues Great-aunt Karen in the kids events, birthdays, holidays, etc. Smart, funny, beautiful kids!

A lot of joy went out of the world for me when Konrad died. He was the person that I knew the longest in my life, that I knew I could count on for help whenever I needed it. I think of him every day and miss him.

Karen Scarseth, Twin Sister.

Was so glad to talk to Konrad at the Kwik Trip in Tomah a few months before he passed away. A really friendly nice classmate.

Hi Karen, I was so sad to hear about Konrad, and I loved your warm and loving tribute to him. I have many nice memories of both of you from Our Redeemer Sunday School! Look forward to seeing you at the reunion.

Hi Karen,

I was very lucky to have gotten to know Konrad and Lyn very well when we were neighbors, in Onalaska, and were members of the same church.  Our sons were good friends and were cub scouts together.  All of the parents were involved with doing activities with them   My husband had a very severe medical crisis and became aphasic as a result.  Konrad spent many hours with him and they co-taught a Sunday school class together.  I truly believe that Konrad played a huge part in Thom's recovery.  We had just moved to Elkhorn when another neighbor called me to let me know that Konrad had died.  My oldest son was very upset because he was close to Robby as well as Konrad and Lyn.  I think of him often.

Karen,

That is such a great tribute to Kon (or Bernie, as we called him back then...something to do with calling the guys by their Dad's name...dorky or what!)

We kids in the neighborhood had such a great time from grade school through high school. We did so many crazy things together...camping in the backyard in blanket tents, playing kick-the-can in to the twilight, riding our bikes everywhere, roller skating around the block, walking to Longfellow for grade school & then junior high, Webster, old & new Central, riding the bus to Emerson (or taking a cab when one was late....who me??!!!). Oh, I almost forgot sand-burr fights at Grace & Nick's farm yard across from what is now the Village Shopping Center & right in our back yard.

Those were the days!! I wish Kon could be with us in September. But he will be there in our hearts & looking down on us from above.

Karen,

Thank you for posting such a wonderful tribute!  I repeat Karen Munns statements and add one.  How often the 3 of us would play H.O.R.S.E.  Konrad made me a better basketball shooter for sure.  I have so many memories of neighborhood, church, confirmation, when the Kon and I went to Church Leadership Training in Minneapolis, and so much more.  I often times felt like I had another brother.  He is missed!  Hugs and love,

Jeanette heart

Dear Karen-

Your beloved brother lives with all of us thanks to your loving post about him and his life.  Seems we can be connected through death as well as through life.  I'm glad to know a little more about his history after Central, his family, children and grandchildren.  I was also heartened to read all the other posts honoring Konrad and all the ways that his life touched so many.  Thanks again for helping us to remember!

Hi Karen, thanks for posting such a lovely tribute. I remember talking with your brother at one of our past reunions; he seemed so happy with his life.  I am so glad I got to see you last winter and heard the story of his family.  He will be with us in September.

An ever-ready smile and soft-spoken greetings immediatley come to mind when thinking of Konrad.  He was a bright spot in the day for all of us who were blessed in knowing him.
