Jody,
Aaron and I held your hand and watched you valiantly maintain your ace grades while battling cancer. Your mother would cry while smiling from the kitchen. You were an inspiration to us, never missing Bible study at school while you were able. You were an angel in disguise and we miss you.
Love,
Sandy

Jody taught me - in the 2 years that I  knew him - to never underestimate the power of the little things.  I only shared one class with Jody.  We were in 9th grade, and I missed so much school that year from strep throat and chicken pox that I barely remember being there.  But as my family was preparing for our long trip overseas in May of 1989, I got a phone call from Jody's mom, asking me to visit him in the hospital.

I was amazed and confused.  We barely knew each other, except to pass in the halls, really.  And I didn't even know he was sick.  But we weren't leaving for a couple of days, so we made the trip.  I didn't recognize him.  And he was in so much pain - but all he could do was smile, and I couldn't believe it.  He knew I was confused - and he explained it to me by saying that he wanted to see me (before he died) because I was always nice to him, and always had a smile for him.

That was it.

When I returned in August, he was gone.  And I have never forgotten that the littlest thing you do can have the biggest effect on someone else - without you ever even knowing it.  Ever.  I wish I could tell Jody thank you.
