Philip B. Vander Velde
 
Philip B. Vander Velde, 64, longtime faculty member at  Western Washington University, died September 21, 2003 in Marysville. He was born to Theodore and Annette (Polderman) Vander Velde in Fayetteville, Ark., on April 17, 1939. He graduated from High School in Lansing, Mich.
 
In 1959 he married Diane Patterson. On July 15, 1995 he married Cindy Stephens.
 
He received his bachelor and master degrees in sociology and psychology from Calvin College, and earned his doctorate in the philosophy of science from Michigan State University.
 
Dr. Vander Velde joined the faculty of  WWU in 1967 after serving as a classroom teacher and public school administrator. He taught numerous undergraduate and graduate courses, and chaired both the Educational Foundations Program Area and the Department of Human Services for the Woodring College of Education.

Dr. Vander Velde officially retired from teaching in 1998 and was honored by his colleagues a year later for his 34 years of extraordinary service to the university with the status Professor Emeritus.

Dr. Vander Velde’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family and from working with the hundreds of young educators in his classrooms. His hobbies included photography and collecting agates.

He is survived by his wife Cindy of Marysville; son Jeremy Vander Velde of Bellingham; and daughter Cindy Black of Marysville. He was precededin death by his beloved son, Scot Vander Velde.

A memorial fund in Dr. Phil Vander Velde’s name has been established at People’s Bank, PO Box 233, Lynden, Wash., 98254.
