Joseph Gordon of Margate, a college freshman who had distinguished himself as a scholar and athlete at Boyd Anderson High School, died on Friday from bacterial meningitis. At 17, he was a freshman attending Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh on an academic scholarship. He was a member of the university's soccer team. Mr. Gordon graduated earlier this year from Boyd Anderson, where he distinguished himself in the International Baccalaureate program and as a finalist in the National Achievement Scholarship Program for Outstanding Negro Students, a defender on the school's soccer team and a member of the cross country team.
