Susan L. Esher Wilson

Susan L. Wilson, 63, Leavenworth, passed away on Friday, Aug. 2, 2019, at St. Luke's Plaza Hospital after a long battle with leukemia. She was born on March 7, 1956, in Baumholder Annex, U.S. Army Hospital, Germany, to retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. John D. and Nancy (Cocking) Esher.
After serving in several military locations, Susan and her family relocated to Fort Leavenworth where Susan graduated from Leavenworth High School. In 1977 she graduated from Baker University with a bachelor's degree in education.
On Nov. 1, 1980, Susan married retired U.S. Army Lt. Col. Scott E. Wilson. Shortly after their marriage Susan and her husband relocated to Washington, D.C., where her husband was assigned to the Pentagon and Susan worked as the financial manager of the American Academy of Actuaries.
While in the Washington area, Susan discovered her love of sailing, even after she and her husband almost capsized their small sailboat in strong winds on the Potomac River. After righting the sailboat she was able to keep her sense of humor even after having to hang over the edge of a stone bridge railing to reattach the halyard (rope) to the top of the mast of the sailboat floating below the bridge in a creek feeding the Potomac River.
Susan and her husband remained in the Washington area until their son, was born in 1987 and her husband was reassigned to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
During her husband's assignment at Fort Leavenworth and continuing for 10 years after his retirement in 1990, Susan put her education degree to work and taught fourth grade at Bradley Elementary School on Fort Leavenworth. She loved teaching, touched many lives, and earned the respect of her fellow teachers, students and parents.
After retiring from teaching in 2011, Susan also discovered her love of gardening and home decorating. She spent many hours in the yard tending her garden and beautiful landscaping and devoted considerable effort to redecorating her home. However, what gave her the most joy was spending time with her husband and their son's family, especially her new grandchild.
She was happiest when they visited for holidays and especially when they visited after her grandson was born. She will never be forgotten by family and friends and will be greatly missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Michael D. Esher.
Susan is survived by her husband of the home, her son, grandson, a sister, and brother.
In accordance with her wishes there will be a cremation and a private family internment will be at Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Her family intends to celebrate her memory quietly and wishes to thank all family and friends for their kind thoughts.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
