Obituary for David Chase Sr., 1949-2005

David N. Chase Sr., 56, of Columbia, formerly of Leavenworth, Kan., died Thursday, June 30, 2005, at Boone Hospital Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

Viewing will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, at Sacred Hearth Catholic Church in Leavenworth, followed by Mass at noon. Burial will follow at Mount Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City.

David was born on March 19, 1949, to Joseph N. and Matilda R. Dougherty Chase in Leavenworth.

Dr. Chase graduated from Immaculate High School, earned his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Kansas University and obtained a doctorate of dental surgery degree, with honors in oral surgery, from Creighton University. He married Phyllis A. Stevens on April 8, 1971, in Kansas City.

He established private dental practices in Omaha, Neb., and Topeka, Kan., going on to work for the Truman Medical Center in Kansas City and MidAmerican Dental in Springfield.

David was a devout Catholic, a generous man and an advocate for justice and integrity. He was an active member of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and contributed his time, effort and finances to numerous other social, educational and charitable organizations. Those who knew him know of his special love for the game of golf. He played on some of the nation’s most prestigious courses and in many charitable events, collecting a cadre of trophies, awards and honors.

He is survived by his wife of almost 35 years, Phyllis A. Chase, Ed.D; son David Jr.; daughters Kimberly A. Harding, Esq., and husband Ryan, Esq. and Stefan Christina Johnson and husband Michael; his mother, Matilda R. Chase of Leavenworth; two brothers, Joseph M. Chase and wife Marisa of Lenexa and Robert P. Chase of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Mary E. Williams of Washington, D.C., M. Pearl Gay of Mesa, Ariz., and Rose E. Pruitt of Silver Spring, Md.; mother-in-law Margaret N. Stevens of Kansas City; sister-in-law Sandra L. Hopkins of Kansas City; one grandson, Joshua; and a host of aunts, nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom loved him very much.

He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph N. Chase; brother Paul F. Chase; and brother-in-law Willie H. Pruitt Jr., lieutenant colonel, U.S. Army, retired.
