Prudence Kimball Phillips

 Dec. 11, 1940 – June 4, 2009

Prudence Kimball Phillips, 68, of Crawfordsville died in the St. Vincent Hospice Center, Indianapolis, at noon on June 4.

Mrs. Phillips was born December 11, 2009 in New York City, the daughter of George and Alice (Hunter) Kimball.  She grew up in Leonia, New Jersey and Winchester, Massachusetts.  She graduated from Brown University and earned a masters degree in chemistry from the University of Washington in Seattle.

After three years at Greencastle High School, Mrs. Phillips taught chemistry at Crawfordsville High School for 29 years.  She inspired many of her students to pursue careers in science and medicine, and was honored on several occasions for excellence in teaching.  After retirement in 2004, while battling cancer, she worked with Margaret Zimmerman providing hands-on science experiences to the students in the Crawfordsville elementary schools.  Mrs. Phillips was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and the League of Women Voters.  She served for many years as president of the Crawfordsville Education Association.

She married David Phillips on Dec. 28, 1963.  He survives her.  Also surviving are a brother, Thomas Kimball, and two sisters, Susanna Monette and Martha Kimball.

The date and time of a memorial service at St. John’s Episcopal Church will be announced later.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Prudence Kimball Phillips Fund (c/o the Montgomery County Community Fund).  Interest from the fund will provide an annual award for the outstanding chemistry student at Crawfordsville High School.
