Jim Unger (Class of 1971)

Thank you for letting me crash the 1972 website! It is amazing how many of you I know. The reason I joined was to notify the football players about induction into the LSE Athletic Hall of Fame, 2016.

I taught gymnastics at UNL during the 70's; then opened Jim Unger's Gymnastics School in 1980. Unfortunately, we had to close in 2015 after my accident.

I played a ton of golf since college--oh not really that much, I guess, just 5 or 6 times a week. (not when it rained) Besides, the 19th hole was always fun.

Many of you know, I had a catastrophic freak accident in 2012. I hopped on a bicycle to ride the one mile to work on 56th St, between Pine Lake and Old Cheney. Pedaling downhill, I was probably going 25 - 30 mph; I glanced over my shoulder to let cars by, then hit 2 huge potholes in the road. They were 3 feet long and 3" deep. I lost control of the handlebars, flew down the shoulder toward the creek, flipped off the bike, and broke my neck hitting a tree.

I had no feeling or movement below the neck--yikes! But despite a broken eye socket, temporary blindness, broken nose, shoulder, and ribs, I am working hard to be able to walk again. It will be one helluva party.
