Thomas Mehl

Thomas Robert Mehl, 78, of Somers, beloved husband of 46 years to Judith (Toczko) Mehl, began his peaceful rest on Monday, July 12, 2021, at Smilow Cancer Hospital - Yale New Haven.


Son of the late William and Marie (Davidson) Mehl, he was born in Hartford on Oct. 21, 1942, and grew up in Manchester. He was a graduate of Manchester High School class of 1961 and later received his certification as a draftsman from Porter and Chester Institute. He moved to Somers where he raised his family and actively served his community being involved in various groups and organizations. Tom was the owner and operator of Helping Hands Handyman in Somers after spending years as a design engineer at Jagenberg. He was a member of the Somers Volunteer Fire Department for over 47 years serving as firefighter, trustee, EMT, auditor, engineer, and most recently fire police. Tom was a member of and served as Squadron Commander for Sons of the American Legion, Post 101. He was a faithful member of Somers Congregational Church actively involved in multiple committees and being most proud of his contributions towards rebuilding the church.

Tom's family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Arthur Skalski and Dr. Lohith Gowda; Nurse Cheryl, and the staff at Smilow Cancer Center for their support and compassionate care of Tom.

In addition to his wife Judith, Tom is survived by his children, Theresa Mehl and her fiancé, Bruce Gallagher of East Hartford, Tommie Mehl and his significant other, Laura Fox of Somers and her children James and Collin McShane, and Lesa Mehl of West Hartford; his dear niece, Daniela Mehl of South Carolina; and his grandpuppies and faithful companions, Angus, Tucker, and Blake. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers, James and Billy Mehl.

Tom's family will receive relatives and friends on Sunday, July 18, 2021, from 4 to 7 p.m., at the Somers Funeral Home, 354 Main St., (Route190), Somers.

A funeral service to celebrate the life of Thomas will be held on Monday, July 19, 2021, at 11 a.m., at Somers Congregational Church. Burial will be private, at the convenience of the family.

The family asks that friends honor Tom's life by considering registration with the organization responsible for acquiring the donor for his bone marrow transplant, which gave them more time with him, 'Be the Match' at
