I first met Hansy at HiY our Junior year (66-67) and found him to be a rather interesting guy not only because of he, himself, but because of the friends he hung around like Bruce Gorrell, James Caudill, Dave Phaler, Eddie Parr and others. My first understanding was that he was always addressed as "Hansy" and never "John" as opposed to the rest of his group who went by their actual names. Now this group had a reputation as being tough guys so I kind of thought it was best to not anger them, but I also thought it was odd that they were in HiY, not something one would think tough guys would belong to. The one thing these guys all had in common was that they were constantly yapping, and I mean that when together they never -  ever  -  ever -  shut  up, constantly yapping about something trivial, usually  started by Eddie Parr or Gorrell, that would always end in loud sustained laughter, not only by their group but also by the rest of the guys present at the HiY meetings.  I soon realized that Eddie was kind of the ring leader and one of the funniest members of the Class of 68, now Hansey, usually kind of quiet would occassionly breakin to clarify whatever story Eddie was telling and Hansey's comments only made the story funnier.   Eddie could make anything funny - even make an Ida Duff Shakespear test into a comedy skit.  I keep thinking of something to compare this group of guys with and the only thing I can come up with is the 1980's TV show' Happy Days' and Arthur Fonzarelli (Eddie) perhaps in combination with The Three Stooges. Whatever the case may be, Hansy and the boys were funny and just crazy enough that I never crossed them to see what they would do as they were all athletic and strong.  I never heard of themever threatining someone or that they were in fights, and to this day can't figure out if they were as tough as their reputation or they just liked being thought of that way.  I will however remember the Prince of Germany - John "Hansy" Hittinger and the "tough guys" as fun to be around.
