William Allphin

William R. "Bill" Allphin Jr., 51, of Parkersburg died at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 1996, at his home.
He was born Sept. 21, 1944, in Marietta to William R. Allphin and Kathleen A. Baker Allphin Gray. He was baptized at First Baptist Church in Marietta. He graduated from Marietta High School in 1962 and from the U.S. Naval Training Center in Great lakes, Ill., in October 1962. He served in the U.S. Navy abourd the USS Dealey as a boilerman technician, Class A, during the Cuban crisis. He was discharged from the Navy in 1966.
Mr. Allphin was employed as a plant worker at Kardex for several years before being employed as a roofer for Smith and Burrows in Marietta. He later worked as a highway construction worker.
He was a member of American Legion Post 15 in Parkersburg and a former member of American Legion Post 64 in Marietta. He was a booster parent for the Parkersburg South High School Air Force ROTC. A natural history supporter, he also enjoyed fishing and hiking. He collected Native American arrowheads and other artifacts gathered locally from the shores of the Ohio River.
He is survived by his wife, the former Margaret "Peggy" Kushen, whom he married Aug. 28, 1992; two stepchildren, James Rodes at home and Thomas Rodes of Indian River, Mich., three children, Melanie Reed Bernardino of Rehoboth, Mass., and Bret William Allphin and Lacey Marlana Allphin of Troy, Pa.; his mother and stepfather, Fred and Kay Gray of Williamstown; one sister, Bonnie J. Donnelly and her husband, William, of marietta; one brother, Russell T. Allphin and his wife, Charlotte M., of marietta; three nephews, Andrew R. Allphin, Adam J. Allphin and Robert H. Donnelly; and one niece, Emily G. Donnelly.
He was preceded in death by his father; his maternal grandparents, Isaac H. Baker and Grace Baker Mooney;l and his paternal grandparents, Alfred and Julia Allphin.
Services are at 1 p.m. Monday at McClure-Schafer Funeral Home in Marietta with Pastor Dallas Gibson of Marrtown Bible Chapel officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from Saturday morning until the time of the services. Burial is in Mound Cemetery with military rites to be performed.
