Dona Carol Swiger (Cooper)

Dona Swiger (Cooper)

October 29, 1944 — April 14, 2023

We recently learned that our friend and classmate Dona Swiger passed away on April 14, and we send our deepest condolences to Dona's family and loved ones. Although some of the class had maintained close contact with Dona, I was not one of those people; I learned a lot about her life in the years since our graduation from the lovely obituary prepared by the funeral home. I am including it here:

Dona Cooper, 78, passed away on April 14, 2023, in Levine & Dickson Hospice House due to stroke and an ongoing battle with dementia.  She was surrounded by loving family.

Dona Cooper was born on October 29, 1944 in Clarksburg, WV, to Carroll Smith Swiger and Margaret Law Swiger.

Dona graduated from  Marietta  High School in 1962 and went on to earn a BS from Transylvania College in 1966 and a Masters Degree in Computer Science from Georgia  Tech.  She worked as Director of Security & Data Services for Norfolk Southern Railway.  She had a brilliant mind and exceptional leadership skills, managing  a group of 30 men during a time when this was very uncommon.

Dona's demeanor was kind, passionate and positive, her smile would light up the whole room.   She was a private and quiet person, but also very witty and fun!  She was fearless and independent, yet sensitive and compassionate.  She loved theater, opera, family, and traveling the world.  She also loved her church, First Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, GA and sang in the choir for many harmonious years.

Forever remembered by her siblings Jane Peoples and her husband Wade Peoples, Jim Swiger and his wife Laverne Swiger.  She is also loved and remembered by her niece Tiffany Spach and her husband Bryan Spach, nephews Dustin Thorne and his wife Suzanne Thorne, Jimmy Swiger and his wife Nicole Swiger, Richie Swiger and his wife Brooke Swiger.  She will be forever missed. Until we meet again.

Dona is preceded in death by her mother and father, Margaret and Carroll Swiger.

The service for Ms. Dona Cooper will be held on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, at 1:00 pm at Raymer - Kepner Funeral Home, 16901 Old Statesville Rd, Huntersville, NC 28078.  the family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:30 - 1:00 pm

The burial will be held privately with the family in Bridgeport, WV.

Memorial donations can be made in Dona's name to Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, NC at hpccr.org/donate.

I am so sorry to hear of Donna's passing. Donna  was one of my first friends when we moved to Marietta the summer before our sophomore year.  I learned to play lots of card games and enjoyed slumber parties with our Devola friends.  I don't remember Donna saying one unkind word about anybody.  Smart, funny and so successful in later life.  So glad she welcomed me into her friendship circle.  ðŸ’•
