Charles E. Worstell

We Lost a Wonderful Classmate This Week

Charles Eugene "Gene” Worstell, 74, of Marietta, OH passed away 1:15 A.M., Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at Heartland of Marietta.
Gene was born on May 23, 1944 to the late Charles Gideon Worstell and Velma Gay McBride Worstell.
He graduated from Marietta High School in 1962 where he enjoyed playing sandlot softball and football.
Gene joined the U.S. Army and served from 1965-1967 doing two tours in Vietnam War at Khanh Hoa. Over the next 50 years he has stayed in touch with a good Vietnamese friend and his family.
Gene has always been proud of things said of him throughout his life. Bill Ross spoke of him as a white Jesse Owens in the fourth grade. Sgt. Stolen told him he was the best soldier in his platoon. Major Two Star General Ifler took him aside one day and told him if he ever needed anything to ask for him personally.
After his service Gene went to work for DuPont where he retired after 32 ½ years. Jack Dixon at Dupont said, Gene, if you were born during the time of Robin Hood, you would have been in his group, in George Washington’s time you would have been in his army. John Lucas told Gene he was one of the best laboratorians Butacite ever had, but you just don't care.
Over the past 40 years, Gene has been good to under privileged families and neighbors and the elderly. He has bought many Christmas dinners, strawberries, pumpkins, and toys including 28 bicycles and many ball gloves and footballs…all of this coming from his heart at no charge to anyone.
Gene has devoted all of his life taking care of his mother, Velma, and has been told many times there’s a special place in heaven for him for the good care he has provided.
Charles "Gene" is survived his sister, Sharon Stewart of Wiliamstown, his brother, Steve Worstell of Marietta and his aunt, Helen Lee of Marietta. Also survived by nieces, Lisa Stewart of Mansfield, OH and Angie Worstell of Marietta, his nephew, Scott Worstell of Marietta, great niece, Heather Schwendeman of Marietta and many cousins in Canton and Marietta.
He is preceded in death by his father, Charles Worstell in 1985 and his mother Velma Worstell in 2015.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday (Aug. 18) at 12:00 noon at McClure-Schafer-Lankford Funeral Home.
