A steel sculpture that will stand 35 feet tall has been selected for the 13th Street green space.

"Echo" an art piece by Illinois sculpture artist Bruce White was chosen by a selection committee following input from nearly 400 Marshalltown residents. The selection was a collaboration of 13th Street District members, Marshalltown Public Art Committee (M-PAC) members and the city officials.

"People are very excited about the public art," said Heidi Pierson, M-PAC chair. "I think the scale is pretty bold, that's something I really enjoy about the concept of 'Echo.'"

Bruce Campbell, who helped select the sculpture, said the piece of art gave him a feeling of renewal.

"I began thinking back to when the district was full of life and activity and then how it waned down to a seldom selected destination," Campbell said. "Now the 13th Street District is becoming renewed in spirit. Like an echo, this area's voice and activity will again be heard."

Mary Giese, Marshall County Arts & Culture Alliance executive director, said acquiring the White sculpture is a positive for the community

"We expect that there will be people coming to Marshalltown to see it," Giese said. "We think it will help serve as an icon for the community."

Installation of the art is planned for late October or early November.

"We don't really know how it will impact 13th Street but that is one of the exciting things," Pierson said. "It's exciting to see the overall community response. Looking at a concept and something drawn out is going to be a little different than the physical piece. I think we are excited to see how all that plays out."

Giese said she hopes this piece of public art will inspire more art.."We hope this will spur further development elsewhere in the community for inclusion of public art in many other places," Giese said. "Also the appreciation of the art we do have."

The art is funded in part by a contribution from the 13th Street District Committee and grants from the Martha-Ellen Tye Foundation, Community Foundation of Marshall County and the Marshalltown Convention and Visitors Bureau. M-PAC is working to secure the remaining funds for the project.
