Dancing Feet for 13th Street is a live dance competition that includes 12 Marshalltown leaders and 12 local professional dancers competing their way to stardom at 7 p.m. March 14, at the Impala Ballroom.

The competition is based on the hit TV show "Dancing with the Stars." The pairs will perform a swing and cha cha dance, both with costume changes. Spectators will then cast their $1 ballot votes. All the money collected will be donated to the 13th Street project.

Mike Tupper, Marshalltown Police Chief, dances with Kali Levsen, local professional dancer, Thursday night, at the Let’s Just Dance studio. Tupper and 11 other community leaders will dance in the Dancing Feet for 13th Street competition to raise money for 13th Street renovations.

Marshalltown Mayor Jim Lowrance said in addition to Thursday group practices, he has been practicing with his partner, who had him in for remedial training, Monday through Wednesday.

"She promises I'm making progress and I'm getting better," Lowrance said. "It's actually a lot of fun. I'm finding that dancing is a lot of work and good exercise, I'm using muscles I forgot I had."

The Rev. Jim Miller, of St. Mary's Catholic Church, said he also has been practicing more than once a week.

"Practices are going well but it's hard to remember all the steps and sequences of things," Miller said. "It's funny how you forget from one class to the next."

Wanda Evans, president of Elmwood Country Club, said she's getting excited for the event.

"My partner and I haven't been able to practice all that much ... but we don't care," Evans said. "We're just going to go and have fun anyway."

David Barajas, CEO of the Marshalltown Regional Partnership, said he hasn't danced swing or cha cha since his senior year of high school in gym class, but his practices have been going well.

"I am having a lot of fun, learning a lot of things and meeting a lot of good people," Barajas said. "We are learning together and along with learning we are doing it for a real good cause, so it should be exciting."

Doug Gervich, co-chair for the 13th Street District Committee, said tickets are still available.

A ticket is $25 and can be purchased at 13th Street Morning Glory Bakery, Coldwell Banker, Willard's, Zeno's or from any dancer or 13th Street committee member. Tickets are also available for purchase at the door.

A live auction will also take place with 13 items - including Iowa Hawkeye football tickets, a dinner package, a hotel stay, custom art pieces and more.

After the competition winners are announced, the floor will be open for anyone to dance on until midnight.
