Richard Rex Noid, 66 - February 24, 1942 - May 2, 2008

Marshall County Sun - There will be no more slightly unorthodox humorous Christmas letters coming from Dick Noid, but he did wish to leave with a slightly unorthodox, humorous obituary.  Unfortunately, time and energy didn't allow him to take care of that so this is our best effort.

When I, Dick, left this world on Friday, May 2,2008, my body went to Michigan State University (I always wanted to be a part of a medical program), but my soul, free of all physical ailments, is wildly driving a golf cart to the heavenly links with a cigar in one hand, a Meyer's rum and Coke in the other, and reading a book at the same time.  Don't ask how.

I will miss spending time with my family, particularly "the Saint," playing both great and stinking rounds of golf at Indian Lake Hills, reading, creating projects, interacting with friends, taking "Mixed Fruit Gang" trips, browsing hardware stores, and walking "the dog."  My only regret is that I didn't spend more time at the office (I deliberately said this no one ever does - you knew I was perverse, right?)  I was born on February 24, grew up (or tried to) in Marshalltown, Iowa, graduated from marshalltown High School in 1960, then from the University of Nebraska, spent three years in the Peace Corps in Tanzania, Africa, received my Master's in Rehab Counseling from Michigan State University, worked for 28 years in that field for the State of Michigan, retired for a few months, then spent five years working as a mail carrier at the Niles Post Office.

Survivors include my first (and only) wife, Carol;  sons, Travis and Derek and favorite daughter-in-law Chris;  best granddaughters in the world, Hannah and Sopia, along with the best dog in the world, Tripp;  also much loved (and of course, favorite) sister Pat and brother-in-law, Bob Troutner of Silverdale, WA., plus their extended family.  I cherished a handful of friends and enjoyed many acquaintances.

Designated memorials my be given to the Berrien County Humane Society, Weley United Methodist Church, Berrien Springs Community Library or Niles Community Library.

A memorial service was held Thursday, May 8, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Niles.

You may follow this link to Dick's obituary:

At the bottom of the page, click on "Archived obituaries", Dick's is near the top of that page.

I met Dick at our weekend / part time job in the kitchens at the Evangelical Hospital. We ran the big commercial dishwasher, washed out the really big pots by hand and slowly got to know each other. That friendship lasted through college with visits back and forth, and after college through letters (remember letters on paper?) and shared photos.

We weren't in contact much in later years, but I miss him as if I had seen him every day.
