John Weiny, 61

John Weiny age 61, of 302 Harrison Dr. died Tuesday evening December 24th at his home while in the care of Iowa River Hospice.

 Funeral mass is set fo 10:30 a. m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with Fr. Bernard Grady celebrating.  Burial will follow at the St. Joseph's Cemetery at Rhodes.  Friends may call at the Estel Perrin Avey Funeral Home Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m.  A masonice service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

He was born December 17 th, 1941, in Denison, IA, the son of William H. and Josephine H. Kommelter Weiny.

He moved to Marshalltown as a boy and graduated from the Marshalltown High School in 1960.  After graduation from the Marshalltown community College he worked for Marshalltown Instruments for 24 years until it closed in 1984.

He served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Campbell, KY. from 1964 to 1966, then for 11 years he served in various military reserve units.

From 1984 to 1989 he was involved in real estate and auctions around central Iowa.  John then began working for the Department of Corrections and worked there 12 years, retiring from the Newton Correctional Facility due to ill health.

On May 18, 2002, at St. Mary's he was united in marriage to Karen Goodman drummer, and she survives.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, AFSME, Marshall Lodge 108 AF & AM of which he was a past master.  He loved being around people and  always had many stories to share.

John is survived by his wife Karen, three sons Randy (Diana) Drummer, Kevin Drummer, Jeff (Amy) Drummer, a daughter Chris, (Mrs. Rick) Matney and seven grandchildren.

Two brothers survive, Phillip (Betty) Weiny of Albion and Charles Weiny of Dallas Texas.  A half brother Harold (Beverly) Weiny of Southwest City, MO. and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Funeral services for John Weiny, 61, of 302, Harrison Dr., were held Saturday at the St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Bernard Grady officiating.  Burial followed at the St. Joseph's Cemetery at Rhodes, with military rites by the Harry C. Harter Post 839 of the VFW.

Casket bearers were Dave Gellnitz, Bill Lehman, Dennis Becker, Darla Mabe, Guy Gilreath and Pete Sciarrotta.

Attending the services were groups representing the Newton Correctional Facility, Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center, and the Marshall Lodge 1808 AF & AM.

The Estel-Perrin- Avey Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
