— Seventeen years ago Dick Holabaugh had to console his son over the death of his best friend, Todd McClay.
On Friday, Holabaugh groped for some of those lessons as he and his family coped with Tuesday’s death of his son, Jason Bossard.

“Jason was best friends with Todd McClay and was with him the night he died,” Holabaugh said. “Both were going to go to Kent State. They planned to play hockey at Kent together. (Jason) tried out for the team and made it. He told me, ‘Dad I have a lot of fun. It’s very good hockey, but I don’t have my friend.’ ”

...And now the Bulldog hockey family is without another friend. Bossard, 35, leaped to his death off the 876-foot New River Gorge Bridge just outside of Fayetteville, W.Va., on Tuesday morning, according to an official at the Fayetteville County Sheriff’s Department. The official said the medical examiner had not officially ruled on the case yet, but said the sheriff’s office’s investigation was all but closed.
Bossard, who played for Meadville from 1987 to 1990 and was a member of the 1989 state championship team, graduated from Meadville with McClay in 1990, but McClay drowned in Conneaut Lake nearly a month after a graduation. Bossard went on to graduate from Kent State with a degree in geology in 1995. He had been working for Chesapeake Energy Corp. in Charleston, W.Va., as a geologist. He had recently purchased a home in Charleston....
