(pictures forthcoming)

~Drafted into the U.S. Army; 1966-1968

" I went to Basic Infantry Training at Fort Knox Ky. for 6 weeks and from there I was assigned to Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. for what they call A.I.T. ( Advanced Individual Training ) for 17 weeks. I was schooled in Aircraft Armament Repair - It was considered pretty good schooling at the time from Army...but little did I know that they were preparing me to repair all the weapons systems on the helicopters in Viet Nam. After graduating from APG I was reassigned to the 67th Maintenance Co. in Fort Campbell Tennessee ... They had no aircraft there or helicopter facility so the Army said:
" you were trained to fix weapons systems on aircraft so we will change you M.O.S.  ( Military Occupational Specialty ) to Small Arms Repair ....so go over to that Supply Truck and start fixing hand guns, rifles, machine guns, grenade launchers and the like for the 101st Airborne Division....
It wasnt long after I was assigned to Fort Campbell that I found a bunch of good men and we started our own rock band....Dad played the Bass and the drums for the group called the Johnny Satan & The Devils Advocates  ...Johnny Satan was one of the Sergeants from 101st Airborne, Dave Hill was the regular drummer, Dad played bass most of the time but sat in on drums and percussion, Tommy Boler (killed in Nam I was told) played lead & rhytm guitar.
Then the war needed all the help they could get and that gig was short lived...The 67th Maintenace Co. was ordered over to Nam to support 101st Airborne ....we left in Sept. of '67 for Nam... We were stationed at Phu Loi at first, moved on up to Camp Eagle around the city of Hue with 101st Airborne....Once there,(about a month) I got the hairbrained idea that I didnt want any part of sitting there waiting for the war to come to me...I wanted to be  in the air so I signed up for Door Gunner positions.  Uncle Richard called me a bunch of names and we drank alot ...and drank somemore...we even smoked alot too !!  It wasnt 2 weeks and I was called up to the 1st Aviation Brigade,47th Assault Helicopter Company in Nihn Hoa ....near Danang ...Once there, I found our job to be be flying air support for the South Korean White Horse Division ...Not a fighting bunch if I might say.  We flew mercy missions as well, for 101st , 82nd and the 173rd Airborne Divisions as well...Mercy missions to get get the wounded out, supply ammo, food and water to the field.
We mainly stayed around the area there in Nihn Hoa..but flew to Cu Chi, Hue, Phan Rhet, Ashau Valley, Quin Yon Mostly what they call II Corp. (middle of Nam) and some I Corp (northern Nam)...  I had my fill and was ready to come home in October of 68 ... "
