David Boyd

David Boyd, 63; was ad executive

David A Boyd of East Dennis, a former advertising executive, died Thursday (7 July 2002) of colon cancer at his home.  He was 63.

Mr. Boyd was a Newton native.  He was a graduate of Northfield Mount Hermon School and Williams College.

After college, he joined McGraw-Hill Publishing Co., and worked in its Boston, Detroit, and Cleveland offices.  In 1966, he went to work for the New York advertising agency Dancer Fitzgerald Sample, where he became senior vice president and worked on large national accounts including RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co., General Mills, and Best Foods.

Mr. Boyd joined the San Francisco office of McCann-Erickson in 1981 and managed United Vintners brands, including Inglenook Vineyards.  In 1984, he went to the Wrangler Jeans Co. in Greensboro, NC, and later joined Fleishman-Hillard as vice president of marketing.  He eventuall started his own company in St. Louis, Boriss & Boyd.

In 1992 he returned to East Dennis, where he had spent summers since childhood.  Mr. Boyd joined the Cape Cod Times in 1994 and helped found Prime Time, a magazine for seniors on the Cape.  He retired in February 2001 because of ill health.

Mr. Boyd was a member of Brewster Baptist Church.

He leaves his wife of 38 years, Judith (Bray); a daughter, Jennifer Schmader of Baltimore; a son, David Jr. of St. Louis; his mother, Jewel Boyd Foster of Needham and East Dennis; two sisters, Marcia Stremlau of Brooklin, ME and Roberta Powlis of Philadelphia; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held July 14 at 3 pm in Brewster Baptist Church.
