Virginia Cusick (Hanlon)

Virginia R. Hanlon, 72, passed away Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at Akron City Hospital. Virginia was born March 30, 1939, in Manhattan, N.Y., to Edward R. Cusick and Lillian A. Rundle Cusick. She grew up in New York City and had many fond memories of her childhood there. She graduated from The Northfield School for girls in Massachusetts. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree in Speech and Drama from Mary Washington College of Virginia and later obtained a Master of Arts degree from the University of Akron in Theatre Arts Management. Virginia lived in the Cuyahoga Falls and Bath areas since 1963. An avid thespian, she directed and performed in numerous area productions at Weathervane, Coach House, Stow Players and Western Reserve Playhouse, receiving various awards and recognition for her talents and dedication to community theatre. She also enjoyed working for several performing arts organizations over the years, including The Akron Symphony, Porthouse Theatre, the Illusion Factory and The Ohio Light Opera. She enjoyed gardening, reading, tennis and spending time with her family but the theatre was always her passion. She once made S'mores on NBC as a Girl Scouts representative. While she was selected as the "poster girl", her dad, Edward (aka The Colonel), refused to let her pose for the poster claiming it would "go to her head." She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Mary. She is survived by her sons Thomas R. (Donna Lynne) Hanlon, of Baton Rouge, and Peter J. (Shelley) Hanlon, of Wadsworth, Ohio; grandchildren, Tim, Stephanie, Mariah, Madison, Jason, Elizabeth, Brandon, TJ, and Marielle; and many wonderful friends. Calling hours will be held on Friday, Feb. 24, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., followed by a service at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 25, at Cox Funeral Home, 1376 High St., Wadsworth, Ohio (one mile north of I-76 on St. Rt. 94). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Western Reserve Playhouse, 3326 Everett Road, Bath, Ohio 44333.
