In Memory

Deborah Chater (Richman)

Deborah Chater (Richman)

Debby Chater Richman’s death on February 6th, 2023.

The Richman’s lived in a New Jersey since college days. Debby was a very active social worker and remained active with families many years after official retirement. Recently Debby and Peter decided to spend their retirement years in a senior community in VT.

The day after their arrival in VT, Debby contracted Covid and in less than two weeks she passed.

Note from Deborah Chater Richman’s daughter:

Hello all,

I'm so sorry to have to let you all know that my incredible mom, Debby, passed away at the University of Vermont Medical Center last night. She had rallied mid-week on the steroid treatment and we had begun to feel some cautious optimism but, this past weekend, her oxygen needs increased to the point that she had to be placed on a ventilator. The plan was to try the ventilator to see if her lungs could heal but she then began to experience multiple organ failure. My dad and I made the decision along with the absolutely amazing staff at UVM that we did not want to try any heroic measures given that, even if she made it through, her quality of life would be diminished past the point that she would have found acceptable. She died quickly and without any suffering.

We will be giving my mom a green burial, as she wished, here in Vermont tomorrow and will not be holding any formal services. However, we are planning to hold a (probably virtual) service of remembrance so that we can all share our memories and be together to celebrate her beautiful life. Once we have plans in place, I will send out an announcement and will welcome anyone who would like to participate.

Once again, thank you for all the well wishes, it has truly made a difference to our family and most importantly, to Debby.

With best wishes for happiness and good health,

Tamara

PS: At the very end Debby's beauty showed through despite all the hospital paraphernalia. She died in peace.  Peter
