So, for those of you that have been gone for a while, you may be surprised at some of the changes to our little home town. I was gone for a few years and was quite surprised myself. The first thing that hit me was that Mitchells Supermarket is gone, a Rite Aid stands in its place. Union Pharmacy had a major fire and the building was a total loss, they moved into Rockwells while the building was being re-built and I have to say, its really nice now. Central added some awnings and the High School added an exterior hallway as well as a fountain and benches outside.

These are but a few of the changes, if you haven't been "home" in a while, you should come home just to see what has or has not changed.

Do you still feel your Panther Pride? Are you really familiar with the history of "our" town?
Here are a few tidbits on "our" town and school history.

This area was one of the first to be settled in Genesee County, along with Geneseeville, where the Huckleberry Railroad is located. It was first settled by Benjamin Pearson in 1833. A major road in Flint is named after him today. It was given a post office in 1837 with Charles Beecher, another notable figure to the area after whom a suburb was also named, as the first postmaster. Originally called Genesee, and then Dover, it was finally incorporated as Mount Morris in 1867, after the city of the same name in New York, where many of the settlers came from. Mt. Morris was one of the first consolidated school districts in the state, having consolidated with Fayville in 1905.
The first school was at the home of Lewis Buckingham as early as 1835 and classes were taught by Miss Sarah Curtis. The first school building was a log building approximately the size of 14' x 18', built in section 13 in approximately 1836-1837. The next school that was built was on Genesee St. across from the Methodist Church. It consisted of 2 rooms (1 larger for the "big" kids and 1 smaller for the "little" kids). The school population for the school year of 1876-1877 was 180 students. Finally due to growth the new "brick" school was built on Genesee Street across from Walter St. The first graduating class here was in 1894 with 5 students graduating.  By 1916 the enrollemnt was approximately 415. In 1896 there were about 31 High School students.
Finally, in 1920, due to the rapid growth of the school, the school building was torn down and was re-built, this building is still in use as "Central Elementary", this new school opened in 1921, a second wing was added to the building in 1927, a third wing was added to the west side in 1938. By this time, the enrollment was at 1,300 and had 5 busses for transportation. In 1950 yet another wing was added
to the east side of the building.
In 1958 the round school was built, it was said to be the only "round" school in the state of Michigan. At the time it was built it was used as the Senior High School. At this time, Moore, Montague & Pinehurst had all already been built and "Central" housed elementary and Jr. High students. In 1967, school board voters gave the "go ahead" to build a new High School, located at the corners of Neff Rd and Mt. Morris Rd. The estimated cost was $3,000,000.

The Story of Elisabeth Ann Johnson
In the spring of 1941, eighty seniors attended Mt. Morris High School in the building that now serves the district as Central Elementary School. Among them was Elisabeth Ann Johnson, the valedictorian. She was a model student and participated in many extra-curricular activities, including a year in the French club, one class play, an operetta, a year in extempore, the senior committee, and a year as library aide. She also spent two years in the French and Glee clubs, two years on the basketball team, and two years on the track team, functioning in her senior year as captain. On June 4, 1941, she presented her valedictory address to her classmates. After graduation she went on to study engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She completed her bachelor's degree in 1945. Tragically, she died in 1949 after a long illness. A small article appeared in the December 21, 1949, Genesee County Herald
In later years, her father August Johnson donated a portion of his farm land, on the northwest corner of the intersection of Neff and Mt. Morris Roads, to the Mt. Morris Consolidated School District for the building of a new high school, with the stipulation that the school be named after Elisabeth.
The Elisabeth Ann Johnson Memorial High School opened its doors in the fall of 1970 and the formal dedication was held December 6, 1970. The first senior class to attend graduated in the spring of 1971.
