Living back east for so many years I lost contact with Steve. But I do have great high school memories of Steve. We had some fun and interesting times. So sad to here he's gone
Steve and I weren't close friends but I temembered him from high school and always considered him a good guy. Joe Maher encouraged me to phone Steve a couple of months before he died. I am so glad I made that initial call. In the weeks that followed we exchanged calls and text messages and I got to know Steve for the fine and decent man he was, in his final weeks he displayed remarkable courage. I told him if I was half as brave as he was when my time comes I'd be happy. And I meant every word. Steve told me he'd had a good life, which should offer some comfort to his family and grieving friends. When I think of Steve I will remember a good man who didn't let the fear of death get the better of him. I told him he was like a scout going out into the frontier and the rest of us would be catching up to him. I think he liked that.
Steve always had a twinkle in his eye, when I knew him in school, the last time I saw him, a few years back now, it was still there. He will be missed. Our thoughts go out to Kathy and his children.
