Saw on facebook that Jeff died suddenly after a short illness on May 10, 2017.   He helped us compile our current computerized class listing some years back.

So sorry to learn of Jeff Goddwin's passing.  He visited with us several times here in Jackson, NH and we shared an interest in music.  Dave and I send our condolences to his family.  Jeanne Hanke Mason

Saddened to learn of the passing of Jeff.   We had spent many days camping around the New England area or just hanging around his home listening to music.  Really enjoyed catching up on all his adventures during the 40th and 50th reunions.  My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

I didn't arrive at Needham High till our senior year.  Jeff befriended me immediately.  We because good friends through the Greater Boston Youth Symphony and all of the commutes to BU on Saturdays and the trips to Carnegie Hall in NYC and the White House (where we had a lunch hosted by Jackie Kennedy).  Jeff and I stayed friends for a while in college, and I spent a prom weekend with him at Lehigh College.  Next I know he was urging me to attend our 50th which I did happily.  I'm so sorry he died so young.  He was the picture of health when I last saw him.  That's how I'll remember him! Clark Andrews

Jeff was indeed a friend – a good friend as his name cannotes. I knew him mostly from band where he was a stalwart. I recall he was involved in the 50th reunion back in 2012. It pains me that I didn’t get to say hello again.

He played the double bass. That’s an upright very large violin played standing. I asked him about it – the tricks of the trade as it were – and he gave me a couple of half-hour “lessons.” Ha. He gave it all his gusto to no avail. I was only slightly better at the bass than he was at the trumpet.

He knew the Andrews family sailed at Lake Massapoag in Sharon. His family was invited one weekend. He took to water sports like a duck to water. He was an instant and credible sailor. He wrestled the tiller and control sheets from my Dad and instantly knew what to do. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a race that day because he would have won it!

I recently researched the surname name Getschwind for another project. Yes, my inquiry had to do with Ancestory.com. I found several possible spellings and several meanings in both high German and proper English. Jeff’s last name is too obvious: Good + win_or  wind.

Condensing two languages and some derivations I think the name means “good wind.” One connation may be “one rides a good (favorable) wind.” OR “one has a favorable wind at their back.” (This is an old sailing term).

May you forever ride a good wind, old friend.
