We all remember Tex.  Who could miss him, the biggest guy on the football field most of the time.  Not only the biggest, but one of the nicest too.  He must have been pretty nice to have gotten Judy Edge to marry him. (or was it the other way around Judy?)  Anyway, a large guy with a large heart who is missed by all of us who knew him.

John is right--we all knew Tex because he was the biggest person in school.  But here's a case where character fitted physique.  Tex was good to me--and for me--in so many ways.  He let me ride around with him when he had his driver's license (and I didn't), he let me stay with him when I needed to, and he was open and generous in other ways as well.  His character was so expansive that he sometimes made me feel small--in body and character--by comparison. I will confess that when we undertook things that we'd later look back on as unwise, immoral, just bad, I was the culprit more often than Tex. It was I, I confess, who talked him into drinking way too many beers, smoking gross cigars,  and then going fishing in a boat on White River in the middle of a hot summer night.  As the boat began rocking in the waves, I did not need to persuade him or me to discharge the contents of our guts into the river. Sometimes I wondered if I wasn't corrupting him.  Tex was fun to be around and, for me, a lesson in innocence.  As I look back after so many years, it was my great good fortune to have been a friend of someone who was at once good to me and good for me.
