VERO BEACH, FL: Daniel James Kalo, age 64, passed away Sunday April 22, 2012 in Vero Beach, Florida.

Daniel was born on November 12, 1947 in Lorain, Ohio to the late Lewis and Lucetta Kalo. Upon graduation from Brookside High School in 1965, Dan enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country on active duty during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, was recognized as the Outstanding Marine at Paris Island , and as a rifle sharpshooter before being honorably discharged in September 1969. Dan returned home to Ohio where he later enrolled at Bowling Green State University and met the love of his life, his wife Valerie. At BGSU, he earned his Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Education and Administration and upon graduation, he started his family and began his career at Margaretta High School in Castalia where he taught briefly and then became an assistant principal. Later, he moved his family to Fremont and became principal of Old Fort High School and then worked as an assistant to the President at Terra Community College. For 17 years, he was the principal at Oak Harbor Junior High School until he retired. Retirement was short-lived as he soon took a position at the University of Toledo, educating aspiring teachers on what it took to be successful in the classroom. In 2004, Dan and his wife moved to Vero Beach, Florida in search of the ocean and sunshine. Unable to sit still for long, Dan took a teaching position at the Alternative Center with Indian River Schools teaching social studies to troubled and at-risk youth.

When he wasn't teaching or mentoring, Dan enjoyed too many activities to list. His favorite hobbies included scuba diving, boating, fishing, and any job that included hard or physical labor. There wasn't a thing he couldn't fix or put together, and he always said "necessity is the mother of invention." He had the opportunity to travel extensively with his wife and children to many destinations in the Caribbean and the Florida Keys. Dan had a true zest for life and lived each day to fullest as if it were his last. He was proud to build both of his homes, as well as helping build his sons and other family member's homes. He loved his wife, children and family deeply and was always willing to do anything for anyone.

He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 36 years, Valerie (Westcott) Kalo of Vero Beach, Florida; his son, Daniel (Kristi) Kalo of Waterville, Ohio; daughter, Natalie Kalo of Orlando, Florida; and two grandchildren, Callie and Daniel. He is survived by six siblings, including Phyllis Minor, Norma Crnko, David Kalo, Arlene Sprouse, Linda Kotowski, and Wanda Ducsak; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Including his parents, Dan was preceded in death by his brother, Theodore Kalo.

Friends may call on Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. at Groff Funeral Homes and Crematory, 1607 E. Perkins Ave., Sandusky, Ohio. Memorial services will be held on Monday, April 30th at 12:30 at the Avon Lake Presbyterian Church, 32340 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake, Ohio. A committal service with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. at Resthaven Memory Gardens, 3700 Center Road, Avon, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Honor Flight of Northwest Ohio, PO Box 23018 Toledo, OH. 43623, or at www.honorflight.org.

Condolences may be shared with the family online at www.grofffuneralhomes.com.
