Amy Merkes

September 02, 1994

Eighteen-year-old Amy Merkes had never felt like she fit in after her family moved from Chicago's North Side to Oak Park in 1987.

"She always liked to go back to visit her friends in Chicago," said her mother, Mary Konopacki.

That's apparently what she was doing early Thursday when Merkes and an 18-year-old Chicago man were shot to death outside a Chicago apartment building in a drive-by shooting that police believe was gang-related.

Merkes, who lived in the 1000 block of South Kenilworth Avenue in Oak Park with her mother and stepfather, Martin Konopacki, was shot once in the upper chest about 12:45 a.m. in front of 3920 W. Cortland St. in Chicago.
