William Godfrey

William Godfrey

Bill passed away on the 29th of September 2007, of injuries suffered in an auto accident.  He was known for his wit and  great sense of humor.  His twin sister Eleanor, was also a classmate. He married Jeanne Jennings in 1964.  They had 6 children, but sadly 2 of his daughters passed away before him.  He spent most of his professional life in Insurance and also served his country in the Air Force Reserve.  He lived most of his life in Harrisville, except the 30 months he spent in France on an LDS Mission.  He believed in giving back to his community, he served as a councilmen for 12 years, serving as mayor for 4 years.  He also served as a Board member on several civic boards.  His example lead his son Matthew to also serve,  Matthew is the current Mayor of Ogden.  We will miss him.

All the way through Wahlquist Jr. H.S. and WHS I always thought Bill and Eleanor Godfrey were twins. I mean they were in the same grade together, right? It wasn't until Bill's passing when I called and spoke with his son Mathew (Ogden City Mayor), that I found out that no they were not twins. They were close in age and therefore were in the same grade together. Bill and my Brother-in-Law Steve Andersen were LDS Missionary Companions together in France in the early 1960's. My Brother-in-Laws Father was Mr. Andersen one of our type teachers at WHS. I always thought Mr. Andersen was one of the most scary and mean looking guys I had ever seen. I was so happy I got Mr. Smith for typing instead of that gruff looking Mr. Anderson. Little did I know in 1965 I would be asking if I could marry his daughter Jean. My knees were shaking. I later learned he was a real 'paper tiger.' He was the best Father-in-Law one could ask for. He passed away of Lou Gerhig's Disease (ALS), in 1997. I still miss him a lot. I send my deepest sympathies and condolences to the Godfrey Family in their loss of Bill. He was a great guy and good friend. Dennis Chamberlain

Billy and Eleanor were two of my special friends- especially 10th grade when we all went to that dancing class on 40th Street. Billy was always full of it and lots of fun. I think he went with us to Salt Lake sluffing school *see my WHS comments...
