Benson Needs Our Help!

Those of us who went on the tour of Benson High could not help but be struck by the changes that have taken place in the 50 years since we were "Bunnies". The school is up-to-date with computers and technology and offers outstanding programing.

Yet, Benson is struggling to maintain its enrollment.  In fact, it is now only 80 students away from losing its Class A status.  This is the result of many factors, including the changing demographic of the neighborhood and problems securing bussing to Benson from Omaha Public Schools.

We were all greatly impressed by the dynamic principal, Anita Baldwin, whose energy is contagious.  She described the lengths to which the staff go to encourage students who come from difficult home and family situations and the pregnant teens to continue on to graduate.

She also described a new program they will institute in the fall which will be a vocational-type course for learning to be an electrician.  Any student who participates and maintains his/her grades will be given summer employment and will be guaranteed a job after graduation.  (Since Tech High closed, there has been no vocational programming available through OPS)

This is in addition to their regular academic programming, their athletics and their outstanding ROTC program- best in the State.

We will be posting additional information on how you can help Benson with its goals of reaching and keeping its students through graduation.
