Oneida >> Mrs. Kathie J. Griffing, 68, of 352 Seneca St., Oneida, died Friday morning, Sept. 8, 2017, in Colonial Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a courageous battle with brain cancer for the past ten months.

Kathie was born on June 29, 1949, in Oneida, the daughter of Robert and Katherine Bizzell Sullivan. She was a graduate of Oneida High School, class of 1967, and had been a resident of Sylvan Beach for many years before moving to Oneida in Nov. of 2006.

She married John A. Griffing on July 27, 1968, in St. Mary's of the Lake Church in Verona Beach.

Over the years, Kathie held many jobs beginning with Eddie's Restaurant and refinishing and selling antiques. She then went onto to work for Stickley Furniture where she retired after 19 years. After her retirement, she went on to her most important job of watching her family.

Kathie was a member of St. Mary's of the Lake Catholic Church in Sylvan Beach for many years and most recently, St. Joseph's and St. Patrick's Church in Oneida.

After moving to Oneida in 2006, John, Kathie, and their canine friend, Daisy, could be seen delivering the Oneida Dispatch and the Penny-saver throughout the city of Oneida. Everyone knew Kathie as "Daisy's mom".

Her truest joy in life was spending time and showering her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with love. She lived for her family.

Surviving besides her loving husband of 49 years, John, and her mother, Katherine Sullivan, of Oneida; are her children, Joanne (Claude) Bielby, of Oneida, and John (Amanda) Griffing, of Chittenango; two sisters, Ann Baitsholts, of Kirkville, and Barbara (William) Monica, of Chittenango; a brother, Dennis Sullivan, of N.C.; three grandchildren, Kathy Mariano, Heather (Josh) Hamner, LCpl Frederick Wilmer, III, whom is stationed in Hawaii; four great-grandchildren, Zoey Mariano, Noah Mariano, Riley Hamner, Lily Mariano; a dear canine companion, Alice, and several nieces and nephews. Kathie was predeceased by a brother, Paul Sullivan; a sister, Agnes Archer; and her beloved canine companion, Daisy.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2017, beginning with a Prayer Service at 9:30 a.m. at the Ironside Funeral Home, Inc., followed by her Funeral Mass at St. Patrick's Church, 347 Main St., Oneida, at 10 a.m. where the Rev. Richard J. Kapral will officiate. Interment will take place in St. Mary's of the Ridge Cemetery, Durhamville. Family and friends are invited and may call on Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home, 342 Main St., Oneida.
