ONEIDA CASTLE >> Mark A. Cavanagh, 63, died early Saturday morning, May 3, 2014, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his family, following an extended illness.
Born in Oneida, on March 13, 1951, he was a son of Joseph F. and Anne M. Rauschenberg Cavanagh. A lifelong resident of this area, Mark was a graduate of Oneida High School, Class of 1969, Niagara University, Class of 1973, and took various banking courses through the American Institute of Banking. He married Jennifer Dalton in St. Patrick's Church, Oneida, on Sept. 28, 2001.
Following his graduation from college, Mark began his 41 year career with the Oneida Savings Bank, where he rose to the senior vice-president of the mortgage department. He also served as the treasurer of the Village of Oneida Castle.
Mark was a lifelong communicant of St. Patrick's Church, serving on the Hope Appeal Campaign, the parish's Finance Committee, the Parish Council, and as the parish representative for the Ignite Men's Crusade. He was a member of the Powhatan Club, Kanon Valley Country Club, the Knights of Columbus, E. Bart Hanifin Council No. 473, former board member of the Oneida chapter of the American Red Cross, the Chamber of Commerce of the Greater Oneida Area, the Oneida City School District Foundation and the United Way of Oneida, where he also served as the drive chairman. Mark coached baseball and basketball for the Oneida Youth Bureau and was an AAU basketball coach.
Surviving besides his wife, Jennifer, are his two sons and daughter-in-law, Justin C. and Kelly Koch of Buffalo and Blake E. Cavanagh of Raleigh, N.C.; two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Joseph K. and Maureen Cavanagh of Oneida, Edward D. ""Ned"" and Janet Cavanagh of Pelham and Christine S. Cavanagh of Oneida; Jennifer's parents, Thomas M. and Joan Dalton of Canton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, James K. Cavanagh on Sept. 13, 2011.
Funeral services will be held 9:30 a.m., Wednesday from the Campbell-Dean Funeral Home, Inc., 260 Main St., Oneida and 10 a.m. from St. Patrick's Church, where the Funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Rev. Richard Kapral, pastor. Interment will be made in St. Patrick's Cemetery. There will be no public hours of visitation.
