Fellow classmates-

I want you all to know that I am not a class "rabble rouser", and have no intention of causing any kind of a scene at our upcoming reunion. I have always been the happy-go-lucky guy with great school spirit and boundless creativity, and that has not changed. I intend on having a damn good time, eating and drinking whatever I want, reconnecting with old friends with a lot of laughing and hugs, and having a few serious conversations. PLUS...dancing my ass off!!!

However, that being said, having lived on the street so many times over the past three years, it toughens you up, and you just don't have the patience for stupid BS and playing games anymore. I have survived to 62 ( collecting Social Security after 31 years in architecture, and living in a duplex in Gainesville ) by two things...learning from my 10-year marriage to my second wife, Judy, who was very "street-smart"...and emulating my late mother, Evelyn, who never took any crap from anyone.

Unfortunately, in my mind, there remain several unanswered questions about this reunion, and they WILL be answered, either now or then, but they will be answered. It will be a more, shall we say, "pointed" discussion if it's "then", but whatever.

At my age, I am so very tired of unnecessary BS and people who waste my time. At 62 and 63, our years left on the planet are dwindling. Our classmates are starting to drop like flies, and that's a fact we can't change. It will get worse, so we had better enjoy this time together now, because the future is promised to no one. This is a Biblical certainty.

Fellow Chiefs, have a great summer, and I look forward to seeing --and spending some quality time with-- each and every one of you in South Florida.

PEACE...LOVE...and HAPPINESS...

LOVE AT THE LIBRARY, a poem by Gator Bruce

She was a beautiful blonde, her silky long hair pulled back in a ponytail

Her skin was wonderfully tanned, and she wore sandals, her feet and toes absolutely perfect

She wore tight jeans and a loose top, and she had that innocent, girl-next-door look

She was standing at the printer, making different cute facial expressions as she worked through the instructions

I just sat there and stared, unable to take my eyes off this goddess creature before me

Was she real or just my imagination? I rubbed my eyes just to make sure

I have been in love many times before, but I still don't really know what it is

All I know is your heart starts racing every time you see her

You want to be with her always. you strain to hear every word that comes out of her luscious mouth

You become so creative in dreaming up things to do with her so that she will stay by your side

You really don't focus on much else, she starts to take over your waking consciousness

And at night she will dominate your dreams, a vision in the darkness

This is love to me...

She is gone now...and I wish she would come back to the library ...sigh...

To all Class of '70 members, especially those who will be attending our 45th Reunion in two weeks-

I am posting excerpts from a message posted by our Class President David Obenauer back in 2010 following our 40th Reunion. It would behoove us all to consider the wise counsel of this fellow Chief in retrospect of the separate reunions held the same weekend only minutes apart.

We are about to have our very first UNITED BLACK/WHITE reunion, which is cause for true CELEBRATION, and for which I give all due credit to Paul Roberts of the MCC Class of '70 Alumni Association. How will it go? Who knows? I, for one, intend to go down there, have a great time with my old friends from Carol City High, and party the weekend away. David and I will toast each other at some point. And, I assure you, at least originating from ME, there will be no confrontations, no arguments, no finger-pointing, just a lot of FUN, FOOD, DRINK and, of course, ROCKIN' and ROLLIN'!

Those who care about our 50th coming up in 5 VERY SHORT YEARS will meet with me and whoever at some point, to talk about that huge looming event. Other than that, Cap'n Oh-Wow says, "Party on, CHIEFS!"

David wrote:

"[Class of] 1970 has just had a wonderful reunion weekend.  2 in fact.  On the same night.  Just 3 miles apart.  I completely enjoyed the first, the only one that I was notified of.  On the Saturday of the event, I learned of the other.  And that night at the first reunion, I was asked by some dear friends to go with them.  The 3 miles.  Only 3 miles.  It was a golden opportunity.

Everyone was having a great time at both places.  But it wasn't everyone together, was it?

Wonderful friends were having fun, laughing, dancing, and telling stories about days together in school.  But it wasn't with all of their friends, was it?

Only 3 miles apart.

The 60s are known for people who marched, and sometimes gave their lives to put an end to the Jim Crowe laws.  “Equal but separate”.

Once you get past “drugs, sex and rock n roll”, The 70s were known for taking a moral stance, speaking out against social injustice.

Have we come full circle in 40 years?  No.  We have just gone backwards, because we were more united in 1970 than we appear to be now.  I use the word appear because I don’t think this is what the Class 0f 1970 wants.  The Class of 1970 is everyone and it must be asked, what do the PEOPLE want?

That night was a great night, but there have been a lot of sleepless nights since. There were many hopes expressed that night but it has been mostly quiet since then.  Silence will ensure that this travesty continues.

Raise your voices within the community.  We are hoping that joined voices will encourage 1970 grads to overcome this.  1970 can not wait 10 years to address this.  We can not wait 5 years.  The class of 70 must begin now. Don't waste any [time].

David"

Speak Of The Devil,

In as much as Bruce has mentioned the concerns of 5 years ago, I would like to again take the opportunity to thank the committee for all they have accomplished since then.

I doubt that the Miami Herald will be as quick to write an article about the Miami Carol City Class of 1970 having a great 45th Reunion as they were to write the speculative article in 2010 but that does not matter.  What does matter is that all Classmembers of MCC ’70 can take great pride in the unity that is behind this year’s reunion. The Class of 70, as a whole, has COME TOGETHER.  Our classmates putting this event together, made it clear from the very beginning that ALL were welcome and that ALL are invited.

This reunion, and the next, and all to come will undoubtedly be a great celebration of the Class history, the present community efforts and our future.  That future will prevail somewhat longer thanks to the creation of the ’70 Alumni LLC.  All are welcome to participate and there is much to be done.  But next week the major job description is PARTY.

Please, ALL COME.

                See you there,

                                David

David-

I could not have said it better.

You know, maybe the thing is to do exactly what we were taught to do by the wonderful teachers we had at MCC, and take the damn bull by the horns.

That's how MY EDITOR, Florence Snyder, at the Smoke Signal would tell me, Sports Reporter Bruce, to do it... TAKE CHARGE OF THE SITUATION!

So, I have contacted THE MIAMI HERALD and told them...

"MIAMI-CAROL CITY SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL CLASS OF 1970 WILL BE HOLDING ITS 45th REUNION ON FRIDAY JULY 31ST AND SATURDAY AUGUST 1ST, AT DON SHULA'S HOTEL IN MIAMI LAKES. THE HERALD DID A STORY ON OUR 40TH REUNION IN 2010, BECAUSE WE WERE A VERY TOGETHER CLASS RACIALLY DURING HIGH SCHOOL, BUT HAD SEPERATE BLACK AND WHITE REUNIONS ONLY MINUTES APART IN FORT LAUDERDALE 5 YEARS AGO. WE, THE CLASS OF 1970, BELIEVE STRONGLY THAT IT WOULD BEHOOVE THE HERALD TO DO A FOLLOW-UP STORY THIS YEAR, IN LIGHT OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA CHURCH SHOOTING AND THE CONFEDERATE FLAG CONTROVERSY. PLEASE CONTACT BRUCE FRENDAHL AT 352-888-1042 ASAP. THANK YOU."

Paul, David or Sandi, if any of you want a piece of this, let me know.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE--------HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT IS TRUTH?

Class members-

Many years ago, Johnny Cash had a hit record with the song with this title. The lyrics speak about the younger generation - US, back then - tired of all the BS constantly handed them, seeking real, honest answers, the TRUTH.

It is often said that in any conflict, there are three sides: yours, mine and the TRUTH. As reasonable, responsible persons, and as human beings, that's what we all want, plainly and simply, nothing but the TRUTH.

Now, that said, back in 1972, you remember the "plumbers" were up to no good in Washington's Watergate Hotel, breaking into the Democratic National Headquarters. Due mostly to the persistent efforts of investigative reporters of the Washington Post, the whole sordid scandal was uncovered, ultimately leading to the downfall of the-President Richard Nixon, who really had the Presidential election that year all but locked up. Realistically-speaking, there was absolutely no need for him to do what he and his henchmen did.

But the bottom line was that the TRUTH was uncovered, for better or worse. Slowly, painfully, constitutionally, yes, but the American public witnessed the fact that the Watergate Committee did its job, justice was done and democracy had its finest moment in this most crucial moment in our nation's history.

Now relating to MCC Class of 1970's Reunions over the years since we all graduated, I feel that, considering the recent flurry of emails, that all members might benefit from knowing the TRUTH. Other versions by those who were there are certainly welcome. These are MY thoughts only.

In 1979, a group of 8 or 10 of us got together to start planning our first reunion, the 10th. It immediately concerned us deeply that we had no black members on the committee. Our efforts to rectify this were fruitless. We eventually selected Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale as our venue for the reunion. At a follow-up meeting prior to the event, Paul Roberts attended and proposed a change in venue to Calder Race Course. The committee felt his idea was a good one, however we had already committed, but retained the thought for possible use at a future reunion. As I recall, Paul was not particularly happy about this, and, to our dismay, a separate black reunion was held that year near the school.

Over the next 30 years and 5 reunions, our committee attempted to have combined reunions, but unfortunately this never happened. The last reunion, our 40th in 2010 at Bahia Mar Hotel in Fort Lauderdale became rather disturbing because we discovered the black reunion was being held on the same weekend right down the street at the Embassy Suites Hotel. So, not only were alumni shuttling back and forth, trying to see old friends, but also the Miami Herald somehow got wind of this, and printed a front-page story about it, which was downright embarrassing, considering that MCC had the best race relations in Miami-Dade County back during our high school years. No one could really offer a good explanation for what was occurring.

Now, I am not clairvoyant, and, although I am a baptized, saved Christian, I am no prophet. I have no idea what will happen in a few days at Don Shula's Hotel in Miami Lakes. It may very well turn out wonderfully, with everyone having a great time, and I truly hope that comes to pass. But there is always the chance that old wounds will be reopened by someone. I don't have a clue, and it certainly won't be up to me.

What I do know is that I have just been informed that certain class members have elected not to attend, supposedly because of things I wrote in past emails. If this is true, I really wish that these individuals would have taken the high road, and addressed me directly. My phone number and email address are clearly no secrets. Perhaps if we had had the opportunity to discuss their concerns, they might have changed their minds about attending the 45th. Now it's too late.

I responded to this information by saying that people do what they want to do. I cannot help who I am and I cannot change how I was brought up. I have a lot of my late mother, Evelyn, in me. She never took any crap from anyone. Her family in Chicago was known as the "Battlin' Allies."

She fought against trash and old mattresses being dumped on the canal banks along 178th Street, and was front-page news in the Carol City Crier. She also retaliated in her own way against our white-trash next-door neighbors, the Zarders. Perhaps some of you remember Johnny Zarder in Charlie Parks' 5th grade class at Carol City Elementary. Johnny was dumb as dirt, and Mr. Parks once threw a piece of chalk at him in total frustration!

Mom and Dad nearly split up over the Zarders, but we moved out of the neighborhood in 1964, only to find out, to our chagrin that the Zarders did the same thing only two months later.

My point is, all my life I have fought racism, injustice, intolerance and anything else I felt was just plain WRONG. Civil rights, women's rights, gay rights, whatever. Those of you who really know me going back to CC Elementary can back me up. Our family did not have a prejudiced bone in our bodies. Mom always told me, "Bruce, I'd rather have you come home with a nice black girl than a trashy white girl." I never understood why there was two water fountains in Friedrich's at 183rd Street and 2nd Avenue. In '68, AFTER Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King was assassinated, I did not understand why a laundromat in Leesburg, FL had separate white and colored sections. I fought for more black students at UF in '72. Anyone who thinks I am a racist because I take issue with Paul Roberts on legitimate reunion issues doesn't know me very well. Talk is cheap. A person should be judged on his life's work. Mine speaks for itself.

That all said, I couldn't care less what color Paul's skin is. Having worked SIX previous reunions, I think I have some experience, and Mom and Dad taught me to FIGHT for what I believe in. If any of you take issue with any of this, my phone number is listed below. Do me one big favor and DON'T GO BEHIND MY BACK and gossip. You all KNOW that that is SO junior high.

GO, CHIEFS, and LET'S HAVE A GREAT 45TH REUNION!

ENOUGH ALREADY!

I don't care who broke the window - just FIX IT!  I don't care who did what 35 years ago - just FIX IT!

Now that someone actually IS fixing it, can we PLEASE quit harping on it?  My vote is for the happy ending, if you please. However we got here, here we are. I would rather enjoy arriving at my destination after a 3,000 mile drive across the country than rehash every rock and nail I ran over in the road and how long it took to fix the flat tire and the crotchety old man at the mini market and the number of red lights I hit along the way and the terrible rainstorm in the middle of Kansas and the alligator in the middle of the road that blocked the traffic for an hour on Alligator Alley and and and and and.......

It's about time to celebrate BEING HERE!  THANK YOU to everyone who has made this happen.

I hope everyone has a great time!! I would love to see everyone!! Cherish all the memories and make new ones for we don't know what tomorrow will bring. Life is very short and we need to hold the ones we love and make sure they know how important they are in our lives.

Michelle-

The one I heard was, "Don't look back, someone may be gaining on you!"

My prayer this Sunday at church was, "Lord, if you help me with what I need before the reunion, there won't be any emails or anything else out of me that someone might take the wrong way for the rest of this week!" So far, he's fulfilling HIS end of the bargain, and so am I!

I had a GREAT time at the MCC Class of 1970's 45th Reunion this past weekend.  I saw a lot of old friends and made a lot of new friends. If you were unable to attend, or chose not to, we missed you but more importantly YOU missed out on a good weekend.  It was attended by great people, we had good food and drink, listened to fabulous music and there was lots of dancing by people that seemed like they were at least 20 years younger than they were, and even some dancing by those of us with little or no rhythm.  We all had FUN!

A big THANK YOU to all of those that were part of the planning and organizing for this event.  It is a hard job that takes a lot of time and effort, and is often done without much praise.  You all did a fabulous job!  As someone who moved from the Miami area after high school and has never been part of any of the reunion planning, I appreciate everyone who has ever been a part of planning any of the reunions in the past.  My thanks goes to each and everyone of you.

I am looking forward to doing it again in five years for our 50th.  I would like to challenge all of you to make our 50th our biggest and best reunion yet.  If you have been to any of the reunions the past or have never been before, consider coming to the 50th reunion.  You won't be sorry.  If each of us reaches out to just a few of our former classmates and gets them to come to the 50th reunion with us, imagine how much fun we would all have.  We have 5 years to make that happen.  Let's show everyone how the school spirit of a Class of 1970 MIGHTY, MIGHTY CHIEF never fades away!

Hi everyone.  I'm so sorry that I missed the 45th Reunion.  I will definitely be there for the 50th.

I know that a million pictures were taken at the event.  Can someone post some of them to the site?  I'm sure all that didn't attend would love to see them.

Thanks!

"I AM A CHIEF", a poem by Bruce Frendahl

In 1967, the choice, for me, was crystal clear...

A star football player for the Norland Vikings actually came to my house, to convince me to attend Norland High

He used a cracker term for blacks only slightly less derogatory than the "N" word

Having no problem with integration, I just stared at him, saying nothing

Yes, I selected Miami-Carol City over our arch rival Norland, basically for two reasons...

Strong basketball tradition...and...air-conditioning.

I never regretted my decision, and I truly enjoyed my high school years

As my alias, Bill Cosby's character"Cap'n Oh-Wow", I wrote a daily column on Mrs. Dewhurst's blackboard

I also got involved in some other school activities too...

Golf team, Quill and Scroll, Smoke Signal, Student Council...

But more importantly, what was MCC really like back in the late 60s?

We learned quite a lot, we had tons of fun, especially at basketball and football games

We made friends, we fell in love, we showed CHIEF PRIDE...

What was the WORST time at MCC?

For me, it was the day after Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was fatally shot

I was actual;ly afraid to go to school that day, I thought my skin was the wrong color...

Somehow I overcame my fears, and nothing bad happened

This was an example of our alma mater having the best race relations in the county

What was the BEST time?

For me, going to the State High School Basketball Championships...WOW, what a memory!

Graduation and yearbooks were a mixture of pride, closure and sadness...my high school years were over...

40 years later, the school we attended was no more

All that's left for us is a cherished, fading memory...

"Far as the widest reaches, great as the sky above,

Bright as the star that shines through the night

As the sun, so strong is thy light,

Lead us, oh Alma Mater, down pathways of our youth,

Hail to thee, beloved Alma Mater, guardian of all truth."

GO, CHIEFS!

I was just wondering if anyone out there remembers how much the SAT cost back in '69 or '70. I vaguely remember taking the test but I never got the results because it would have cost more (at the time) than I made in a week. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you.

RICK BLUE

Some of us knew Ricky Blue at Parkway Junior High. Back then in the mid-60's, he was the only person of color there. I did not have him in classes there, but got to know him pretty well at UF, when we worked together in the Coastal Engineering Department around '74-5. He was a pretty cool guy, and we laughed often about ink pens that clogged up and wouldn't work. You know, I spoke with him about his experiences at Parkway. It wasn't easy for him, but from what I remember, he told me that his positive attitude and engaging personality helped get him through. I always liked Rick, and it made me sad to hear from Kenny Angelou that he had passed on. Rest in peace, Rick, see you in the next world, my friend...

Sure, I remember Ricky Blue.  He was the first black kid to attend Parkway Jr High.  Very smart.... and very brave.  I don't know if I could have done what he was asked to do.  He was a real hero!

Betsy Wharton ('69) (Crittenden)

Hey Class of 1970, I've been posting this on Facebook but thought maybe I should post this here. It's an event sponsored by the Class of 1969 but ya'll are invited as well:

The Miami Carol City Senior High School Class of 1969 Spring Picnic is confirmed for Saturday, April 9, 2016. It will take place at Amelia Earhart Park, 401 East 65th Street, Hialeah, FL beginning at 12:00 noon. Tickets for the picnic lunch and all refreshments are $20/per person; and $10 for each child age 10 years old and younger. Checks must be made to our alumni group treasurer, Ernestine Alexander, and mailed to her address: 1799 N.W. 155th Street, Miami Gardens, FL 33054. She must have all checks and money no later than March 12th so that we can have an accurate count for the food. Please note that the park charges a $7.00 per vehicle entrance fee, so classmates might want to get together and carpool to the picnic. The afternoon will be filled with laughter, good food, and activities, plus the joy of being with one another again.

Hope you'll join us!
