Joe Leinenkugel

Joseph “Joe” Michael Leinenkugel, age 68, of Des Moines and formerly of New Haven, passed away on Wednesday, October 3, 2018, from a heart attack.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 27, 2018, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in New Haven with Father Jerry Kopacek officiating. Inurnment will be in the St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, immediately after the service. A luncheon and a time to greet the family will follow the inurnment in the St. Peter’s Church Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to either St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in New Haven or Comprehensive Systems, Inc. in Charles City.

Joe was born May 3, 1950, in Osage, the oldest son of Norman “Bud” and Mary Jane (Fox) Leinenkugel. He was a member of the 1969 graduating class of Osage Community High School and went on to attend Area One Vocational School in Calmar. Joe worked at the family business, New Haven Hardware, until he moved to Des Moines, in 2000, and went to work for Kum and Go. Joe was a kind, humble, good-hearted man and had the gift of gab. Joe enjoyed fishing, finding great bargains at local garage sales, playing cards and listening to all kinds of music. He also treasured his time he had with family, especially his nieces and nephews.

Joe is survived by his siblings, Mary Anne Leinenkugel of Osage, John (Kathy) Leinenkugel of Grimes, Therese (Tim) Rolfes of Ankeny, Rose (Tom) Hagemann of Des Moines, and James Leinenkugel of Urbandale; sister-in-law, Cindi (Harley) Cohen of Murrieta, California; nieces, nephews and their families, John (Stephanie) Lubbers and their daughter, Lorelei, David (Kaylee) Hagemann, Annie (Matt) Fink and their children, Addison and Bennett, Rachel and Grant Rolfes, Amber, Lindsey and Garrett Darnell; aunts, Rosie O’Neill of Waterloo, Virginia Fox of Neosho, Missouri, and Karen Fox of Charles City; his fishing partner, his uncle, Ivo Fox of Indianapolis, Indiana, and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Thomas and Paul Leinenkugel.
