Have you heard the bizarre case of the campaign worker for Ashwin Madia stealing a scooter while lit dropping? It turns out the victim is the daughter of Bruce Ackerman of our class. Here you see him on video talking about the burglary.

(By the way, Folstad pled guilty to disorderly conduct and was fined $378.)

I made a visit to OHS last week. Earlier this summer, my girlfriend and I made a class reunion trip to her high school, and I decided to return the favor. It would have been nice to talk to some people, but what the hey, all I can do here is report on the condition of the building.

The front-center of the school is largely unrecognizable but the rest is much the same. Several additions have been put on the front-center of the school. The old library is now an AV center. The old cafeteria is now a locker bank, and the old gymnasium is now the cafeteria.

The west wings are structurally the same but have been refaced. The blue aluminum facing is gone. I didn't get to see if the lettering our class paid for is still there. I think that was on the music wing anyway.

We walked through a lot of the building. The one thing I wanted to see was the condition of the courtyard. It was during our time at OHS that the first trees were planted there. It is now a very arboreal spot. I took a photo and will add it to my profile when it is ready (yes, I still do the photo processing thing). Apparently the science department from our era is the longest lived: Mr. Parr, Mr. Schultz, and Mr. Rosch are still in the building. I left my business card on Mr. Schultz's bulletin board with a note.

Kevin McCreight's sky-map mural is gone. Dammit!

Russell LeRoy Hersch, 94, Brooklyn Park, retired principal of Osseo Junior High School, died Monday, June 14, 2010, at Maranatha Nursing Home in Brooklyn Center, Minn., from natural causes.

Funeral service will be Saturday, June 19, 2 p.m., at Maple Ridge Church, 8450 Elm Creek Blvd, Maple Grove. Interment will be at Big Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday evening 5-8 p.m.

Hersch was born May 17, 1916 on the family farm in Jesup, Iowa, to John and Ethel (Owen) Hersch. Hersch spent his first six school years in a one-room country school south of Buffalo, two years in Montrose schools, and four years at Buffalo High School, where he participated in football, basketball, and track. He graduated in 1934. He spent about six months working as a creamery man at Radisson Dairy Farm in Columbia Heights.

In 1935 he spent six months in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) near Grand Marais, Minn. In September of 1935, he enrolled at Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, Iowa (now the University of Northern Iowa), where he participated in football and received a BA degree in 1939 with a major in math.

In the fall of 1939, Hersch started a teaching and coaching career at Geneseo Consolidated Schools near Buckingham, Iowa. In his second year of teaching, he married Irma Selg of Big Lake, Minn. After three years in Geneseo, the Hersches moved to Center City, Minn. where both taught in the Lindstrom-Center City schools.

In March of 1943, Hersch was inducted into the Army Air Force at Fort Snelling. His training and service as a meteorologist took him to many places.

Russ continued his math teaching and coaching in 1946 at Cambridge High School in Cambridge, Minn. After 11 years at Cambridge as a teacher, coach, and assistant principal, Hersch accepted the position of Jr. - Sr. High School Principal at Osseo, Minn. in 1957. He retired in 1982, having put in 43 years of teaching, military service, and school administration.

Russ Hersch will be remembered by students and staff in the Cambridge and Osseo school districts, and, indeed, by all who knew him, as a man who cared about them.

Hersch was a charter member and treasurer of C.R.O.S.S. in Osseo and Maple Grove where he was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was an active member of the Boy Scouts of America, Red Cross Swimming instruction, the American Cancer Society, AFS, Gideons International, International Bible Society, and he was a charter member of MapleRidge Church of Maple Grove (originally Osseo Baptist Church).

In August, 1996, Hersch married Janet Johnson of Osseo.

He is survived by his wife; four children, Jon (Gretchen) Hersch, Medina, Minn.; Geri (Don) Isaacson, Westminster, Calif.; Bobbi (John) Augustine and James (Candace) Hersch, both of Champlin, Minn.; and three step-children, Karen (Mike) Schlegel, Champlin; Susan (Jeff) Farber, Walnut Grove, Minn.; and Mark Johnson, Osseo. He is also survived by sister, Opal Stokes, Monticello, Minn., as well as 14 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Irma, and four sisters: Gladys Hansen, Francis Altenburg, Dorothy Johnson, and Olive Mitchell.

Osseo school employee charged with possession, sale of cocaine

Published: Tuesday, May 10, 2011 2:36 PM CDT
An Elk River man who has been employed by the Osseo Area Schools was charged May 6 for allegedly possessing and selling cocaine.

John Joseph Daugherty, 59, was charged by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office with one count of second-degree sale of a controlled substance and one count of third-degree possession of a controlled substance. Both are felony charges.

If convicted, Daugherty faces up to 25 years in prison and up to a $500,000 fine for the second-degree sale charge. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000 if convicted on the third-degree possession charge.

Daugherty worked at Osseo Junior High School as an administrative assistant, a non-teaching position. "Because this suspect works at a school, there was added urgency to investigate this case quickly and thoroughly," Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek said.

The arrest was made by the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office at a non-school location. Authorities reported there was nothing to indicate any students or anyone else in the school community was involved in the case, which remained under investigation when this edition went to press. Anyone with information should contact the sheriff's office at 1-888-988-8477.

According to the criminal complaint, narcotics officers had reason to suspect Daugherty was involved in cocaine sales, so they set up a controlled purchase of cocaine from Daugherty using a confidential informant. They began surveillance of Daugherty's vehicle in the parking lot at Osseo Junior High and observed him leave the school and meet the informant.

After the meeting, the informant turned over the suspected cocaine to officers, who then got a search warrant for Daugherty's person, his home and his office.

They executed the search May 4 and recovered three bindles of cocaine and a plastic bag from Daugherty's pants pocket. The cocaine weighed 3.3 grams. Officers also found suspected drug notes from his home in Elk River.

Daugherty's first court hearing was set for May 9, and he was being held in Hennepin County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.

UPDATE:  Daugherty is no longer the administrative assistant at OJ.  He pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 1) 2880 hours detention (i.e., 120 days in the workhouse); 2) 240 days house arrest; 3) three years probation; 4) four years in prison stayed pending successful completion of probation.

On a recent trip to Minneapolis, I visited Mr. Tom Jones, one of our Osseo Junior High teachers, at his home.  Mr. Jones is still an avid motorcycle collector.  In fact, he came up with the idea for a "motorcycle collector" license plate which costs $10 for life, saving a collector the trouble of keeping dozens of rarely-used bikes registered and inspected.

It may be of interest that Mr. Jones was the subject of a chapter in a recent book about motorcycle restoration, Motorcycle Survivor.  The book can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Motorcycle-Survivor-Tales-Unrestored-Realm/dp/0981727093/

Here are some photos of Mr. Jones and his amazing collections of motorcycles, swords, and motorcycle-related toys.
