On television, children live with TV Single Dads for different plot reasons. The most frequently-used is the death of the mother. This isn't typical of real life. But sometimes things happen in real life that makes television stories seem mundane.
I was married to Michelle for 12 years. We divorced in 1994, and after a bitter series of custody disputes, she moved to Oregon. Our kids lived with me, but visited her frequently in the ensuing years.
Michelle was an economics professor, an author, and a writing teacher. She also took several part-time jobs. One of these jobs was driving a cab in Salem, Oregon.
On October 11th, 1998, Michelle had been working for two weeks as a cab driver. She got a call for a fare at 4 am, her first fare of the early morning. She picked up the fare, and about an hour later, police found her cab wrecked into a tree. Michelle had been shot in the head. A man with a gun was arrested in the vicinity. He was convicted, and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in jail.
Things don't happen like this in Real Life. But it did this time. My kids miss their mother. I feel bad there were some things that were never resolved between us. As you're reading over these show listings, please remember my children in your thoughts and prayers. Thanks.

I ran cross country with Michelle. I remember her determination at the beginning of the season and how the girls won the state championship a few months later. She was very nice and a little shy. She will be missed.
