Judy Blair (Ricks)

Mary Frances Haugse Hornbeek

Nov. 9, 1944 — March 7, 2022

Mary Frances Haugse Hornbeek, a longtime resident of Davis, passed away at her home on March 7, 2022, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Her beloved husband of 54 years, Larry, was at her side in the final moments. Despite the difficult challenges of Parkinson’s, she maintained a positive attitude until the very end.

Born Nov. 9, 1944, in Palo Alto, Mary was the first daughter of Virgil Samuel Haugse and Mary Jane Kramer Haugse. She attended St Thomas Aquinas elementary and Palo Alto High School. After graduating in 1962 she moved to Davis to attend UCD, where she majored in history.

Mary and Larry met in 1965 on a three-couple blind date that also included life-long friends Diane Rhett, Dave Schmatjen and John Swanson. Larry was stationed at Travis Air Force Base at the time, and Mary was a student. The couple married in Palo Alto on April 1, 1967, and were approaching their 55th wedding anniversary.

Mary and Larry loved the Davis community and have lived here ever since. They raised three children, Gary, Michael and Nancy, who attended Davis High School. Mary was a devout Catholic and the family are long-time members of St James Church. Mary was very social and inquisitive and enjoyed long conversations with her many friends in the community.

In 1981 Mary returned to school at Sacramento State to study accounting. Mary earned a CPA license and eventually started her own private tax practice. While tax season was an annual challenge, Mary was always very fond of her many clients.

One of her passions was playing bridge. Some of her closest friends were members of “the bridge group” which met every month for decades. She also often played bridge with friends at University Retirement Community and the Davis Senior Center.

Mary loved spending time walking on the beaches in Sea Ranch, where the family owned a home. Other favorite activities included walking on the greenbelt, traveling to see family and watching the Oakland A’s. She enjoyed volunteering at the Mondavi Center and the Sacramento Jazz Festival.

She is survived by her husband Larry; grown children Gary Hornbeek and wife Susie of Portola Valley, Michael Hornbeek and wife Kim of Jacksonville, Ore., and Nancy Shields and husband Lance of Jacksonville; grandchildren Lance, Blake, Cole and Madison Shields, and Grady and Casey Hornbeek; brother Hank Haugse and wife Karen; and sisters Barbara and Katie Haugse.

A private burial will be held for the immediate family. In addition, a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 25, at St James Church in Davis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity involved in the fight against Parkinson’s disease, such as the Michael J. Fox Foundation or the Davis Phinney Foundation.
