Paul Fry

Stan was a good friend with whom I wish I hadn't lost touch. Very sorry to hear he's gone.

Stan was a good friend during high school but, like Paul Fry, I'd lost contact with him after he graduated from Stanford. At some point in the past, I recall learning that he was at the University of Alabama, but since my travels never took me there, I didn't reconnect with him.

Since the In Memory section of our class page didn't provide any further information about his life or death, I searched and found an online Tuscaloosa News obituary from April of this year, https://www.tuscaloosanews.com/obituaries/ptus0199779, which reports that he died on April 17th in Boise, ID. Stan was a widower and his daughter Laurie and her husband live in Boise, which must be why he was there. The article reports that he'd had Parkinson's Disease for ten years prior to his death.  In his long career at UA, he'd taught and conducted studies in particle theory and quantum mechanics, chaired the Department of Physics & Astronomy, and been Assistant Dean of the Coillege of Arts and Sciences.

The description of Stan as a father, husband, and musician, and as an educator, researcher, and involved member of his community sounded very much like the person we knew six decades ago, and made me sorry that we hadn't keep in touch in the interim.

I am sure that many of our classmattes will, like me, regret not having kept in touch.

As others have noted, Stan was a wonderful guy.  Very funny and very smart.  There are two events that stand out in my memory:

At his home, the family had little bowls of potpourr strewn aroundi, which I commented on as pot pourri.  It got quite a laugh and 15-year-old me was very embarrased.

He fell off his motorscooter and had such chafe burns on his rear end and thighs that he had to spread himself between two chairs to lie on his back.  Said motor scooter also gave me a burn on the inside of my right calf.

Stanley was one of my best friends at Crescent Park and Jordan.  Many of our Cub Scout friends are also on this member list.  We played all the sports for the Crescent Park Hawks -- the high point and end of my athletic career.  His mother, Alice, tried to teach French to an afterschool group of us -- our attention span wasn't sufficient for success!  I think we had a beer (or three) in college -- he was never big on the LDS thing, and note that his memorial service was at an Episcopal Church (thanks Alex!).  His favorite baseball player -- Stan the Man; His favorite football player -- a lineman for the St Louis Cardinal football team who shared his name!  Best photo of Stan was when he had an Afro -- then he also LOOKED like Einstein!  Always thought our paths would cross again 😔  Bill Hagbom
