I remember Pat all the way back from El Carmelo elementary, where we were on the "Safety Patrol". Back in those days, they actually let the 6th graders monitor the cross-walks in front of the school. This was serious stuff, we marched around like we were in the army and stood in formation as we folded our red sweaters. It was a simpler time. Everybody walked or rode their bike home. Nobody got picked up in a mini-van in those days.
Pat and her brother Cliff lived 2 blocks away from us on South Court, right on the dividing line between Paly and Cubberly. She was good friends with Diana Raney who also lived on the same block. Of course being the high school social butterfly that I was not, I barely ever talked to either of them. A hard lesson learned about life.
