I think it was done by a one armed guy...

Perhaps by Mrs Peacock with the iron pipe in the kitchen...

Would you believe by agent 99....

One adam 12..... respond to a shooting at the book depository building code 3...

squad 51 gunshot wound at the jail...

any one else remember better days...

FELTONVILLE

Anyone care to comment on this minor controversy?

I grew up at "D" and the Boulevard which in Feltonville. I went to Clara Barton Elementary School.

I have a couple of rascally female friends who grew up on the 5000 and 5100 blocks of Whitaker Avenue. They went to Thomas Creighton Elementary School. They call the "F" and the Boulevard neighborhood Feltonville.

So, "F" and the Boulevard people, did you grow up in Feltonville? By the way, the Philadelphia neighborhood map refers to that area as Crescentville.

I do not know about others but..Feltonville, was across
the creek..
I was an F an Blvd kid.. (little humor there in spelling)
We always referred to our area as F and the Blvd..
I think they are using playgrounds as area marks.

We used to be able to call Pennway Street the Near Sears neighborhood

OK GUYS,
WE REFERRED TO OURSELVES FROM FELTONVILLE/JUNIATA PARK PEOPLE, DEPENDING WHO WE WERE TALKING TO, WHEN, AND WHERE,
BUT DON'T EVER RECALL A REFERRAL TO "CRESCENTVILLE"
INITIALLY, WE WERE ALWAYS FELTONVILLE, UNTIL THEY BUILT THAT BRIDGE.

On Google maps there is now a "Feltonville" Boys and Girls Club on Whitaker at F St. There is a street level view attached that shows interactive views looking up F, Whitaker and surrounding streets.

For what it is worth my Mom and Dad told me we lived in "Feltonville". So I just went along with that. If someone asked where I lived it was "Feltonville"
By the way anyone know who Felton was ?

For what it is worth

From Wikipedia

On old Second Street Pike, now named Rising Sun Avenue, and Fisher's Lane stood the Feltonville School, having twelve grades, all taught by one teacher. Some of the classes had only five or six pupils. Several branches of the Felton family, for whom the community was named, resided on Fisher's Lane, the present "D" Street, which extended all through the community. It ran north and south, turned westward at what is now the Roosevelt Boulevard, bounding the twenty-eight-acre farm of Mr. John Hoffner. Mr. Hoffner was a relative of the Felton family. Mr. Christopher Simon was also a Felton.

Feltonville, took up a large area ..just like Mayfair, or
Hunting Park... So I would say that by saying you were from F and the Blvd, or Sears and the Blvd, etc you would be narrowing down the area you lived at.
To me the small area before the bridge was build....
The creek up to the Blvd and the railroad tracks formed
a separate area, sort of a triangle ..
That's where I grew up

Regardless of what it was called, I always and still do when I meet a Philly person say to "I grew up near F and the Bvd". If they don't know where that is, I say it is in the Lower Northeast.

Just to confuse things more, blockshopper.com refers to the area as "Lawncrest". Go figure.

Before the bridge was built, we almost never went over to "F" and the Boulevard and never thought about it as Feltonville.

Those two girls will kill me if I continue this discussion though.

On another matter, we are assembling a "What do they look like now" picture page in honor of Olney's January '61 50th Anniversary Reunon in May 2011. This picture set will surely increase as we obtain more faces.

Some Creighton and Barton "kids" in the mix. Lots of bags and sags, but everyone seems happy.

See if we all sort of agree here.
The city was cut up into sections, like feltonville, mayfair,
hunting park,etc...Those sections had many neighborhoods.
For Example you may have lived in the Kensington area
but you "hood" was K and A.
Ours was F and the Blvd.. The only question is, What section?...
And since we were set off on be 3 borders .
#1 The Blvd,#2 The Creek,#3 the Railroad track .
We border 3 sections that could include us...
So what ever section you like is ok . but I will always be
from F and The Blvd.

Hey gang, I got reunion fever. I just was with my wife at her High school reunion luncheon. I was bored out of my mind cause I did not know anyone but she had a lot of fun. I was talking to the organizer and found out it can take 8 months to get a good place to hold something like that. When are we going to start to planning ours?

10/25/09 02:07 PM #366

Sam Graffman (1970)

A Reunion Cruise ..That would be a good Idea ..
So much to do on a cruise that spouses will not be bored...
There are cruises from Bayonne N.J. that are pretty good deals.. There are only a couple out of Philly..
Just a Thought.....
I would be glad to help plan this...

Ron Gusoff (1970)

Sam has talked about a cruise before. For a lot of reasons ( and I wont go into them now ) I can't go on a cruise and I am really looking forward to a reunion.

Anything you can do on a cruise you can do in Atlantic City!

10/26/09 06:35 PM #368

Sam Graffman (1970)

Sorry Ron I like my ocean water blue....
Not N.J. brown...
For those who never cruised and may be a little scared
of cruises.. These BIG ships theses days are very safe and you don't even feel like your moving...

GOOD JOB, RON. NOW I FINALLY KNOW WHAT "R"& "W" STOOD FOR.
IT'S AMAZING THAT I NEVER REALLY THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEFORE.

Kenny

Are you putting me on you really did not Know?

I recall getting bagels on a Sunday morning from Ray .

10/28/09 12:18 PM #371

Kenny Paul (1970)

NOPE...NEVER KNEW. MOST OF US ON WHITAKER AVE. KINDA AVOIDED THE AREA BECAUSE WE ALWAYS USED TO GET INTO MAJOR FIGHTS WITH THE GROUP THAT USED TO HANG OUT ON THAT CORNER.

10/28/09 06:34 PM #372

Ron Gusoff (1970)

Yes I guess some bad guys hung out but that was at night as I recall. I only went to R&W on Sunday morning for bagels and lox and on Saturday afternoon for corned beef on rye for lunch.

10/28/09 07:34 PM #373

Sam Graffman (1970)

Bad guys ....Nah...Just some of the "tough guys " of the
neighbor hood... However if you knew them you were fine or "protected'...But they never really bothered anyone.
It was just their hang out...
As I remember there was also a bunch who hung out by the railroad bridge in the summer...

Hey just an idea but when you make a comment here, keep it here, instead of going to the user forum to add info..
much easier to keep track of for all...

Scott:

The Feltonville Boys and Girls Club is the old Tabor Rams Club at Whitaker and Louden Streets. Just about a year or two ago they renamed the building the Lauretha Vaird Clubhouse after the female police officer that was killed responding to a robbery at a bank at Rising Sun and Wyoming some 10 or so years ago. The clubhouse is right across the street from my home on Whitaker Avenue
